October 11, 2011 at 12:31 pm in reply to: no support for 60p or content management on MAC. ?????Hi Prema, can you please post your process for getting the 60p to work in FCP off the FS100? Also wondering if you’ve used it to overcrank/slo mo? Have had the FS100 since the day it was released and love it, but haven’t had a chance to experiment much. Thanks.

Craig is right. The JVC, for the price is amazing. I own 2 EX3s and am presently helping a friend in the exact same boat as you. He uses my EX3s when possible, but has shot the bulk of his footage with the JVC HM100U. There’s a little more noise in the image at low light, but otherwise, it’s the perfect tool to integrate with the EX3 or EX1 because of the codec match. Also, if money is an issue, the SDHC cards are much cheaper. The size of the camera also makes low profile shooting much easier, since without the mic unit, it’s the size of a consumer camera.

Had the same problem with one of 2 new EX3s. Ability to focus would be lost in all modes and would only return when turning the power off and then turning the camera back on. This was a real bummer as it first happened while shooting a concert. EC Professional in NYC was great and immediately replaced the entire unit, even though they though it was only a problem with the lens.
I finally used the new camera for the first time, and the replacement seems to have the same problem. Will be returning it tomorrow. There’s obviously something wrong.

I have the same MacBookPro processor with 2 GB RAM. It works fine for capturing, playback and basic FCP editing. The most import part of the equation is the external drive you are using. I use either a G-Raid Mini 200 GB 7200 RPM via FW800 which is fine for editing. I also have a 1TB Lacie Little Big Disk which is much slower, but sufficient for capture and basic editing. After capture of the footage using the ExpressCard slot, I then eject the LaCie and connect via the eSATA port and work is much smoother.

We had a similar issue this week shooting a concert with 3 EX3s. From reading posts on other sites, there definitely seems to be a problem with the drive. It seems that the drive powers off while in use, with no warning. Only one of our cameras had the drive unit and was being operated hand held on stage during a pretty loud performance and 40 minutes into the show the drive reported an error and switched to recording on the SxS card. Not sure if the drive, the battery or its cable was in any way jostled, but we weren’t doing anything out of the ordinary for a hand held shoot.
At the end of the show, we were offered the option to restore the card and selected not to execute, as weren’t sure what that meant at the time. We were able to see and move the entire BPAV file to my MacBook Pro, but on using File Transfer, noticed that 2 clips were not accessible through File Transfer or Clip Browser. The drive belongs to one of our DPs and I did not have access to the unit at the time. The solution was found on another post and referred to in the EX3 manual, and was easy enough:
1. Copy the entire BPAV file back to a SxS card – were lucky that our BPAV file was under 16GB
2. Place the SxS card in the camera
3. On powering up the camera, I was again given the option to Restore media. selected execute, media was restored.
4. Recapture the BPAV
5. The clips that were originally missing in File Transfer appeared and were imported, saving 40 minutes of footage.Would love to know if others are having problems with the drive, as I am now uncomfortable ever using it.

Your best bet, is to have the Production Company capture the footage from the F350 at the end of each shoot day. They can use the camera, avoiding an extra rental and send you a drive with all of the footage already captured and ready to import into FCP. The added benefit of this, is that you don’t risk Fed Ex losing your camera masters. Footage transfers at about 1.8x speed, so a 64 minute disc will be captured in about 45 minutes – we’re usually done transferring before we wrap our gear. Your file size will be smaller than if you digitize the footage at 10 bit SD and you then have the flexibility of the HD frame size in case you need to blow up, zoom in, etc, or if you ever need an HD master.

Try CHV https://www.chv-plugins.com/
We use their Garbage Matte Plug-in that works great directly in FCP with 5, 10, 20 and 40 pt options. They also have a full motion tracking bundle that should do everything Animatte does in the Avid.

We do have a Blackburst generator, but it wasn’t attached to the DigiBeta. Will try it on Monday. Thanks.

The FCP 2 install allows you to select the location for the DVDSP, Motion and Soundtrack media.

The G-Raid Mini is awesome. Just finished cutting a project shot and edited in XDCamHD 30fps @ 35mbps and the drive held up. In addition to the 90 minutes of XDCam footage, we also had 10 minutes of HDV greenscreen footage at 1080i60. The final piece was 12 minutes long and incorporated several minutes worth of title animations created in After Effects and delivered as uncompressed QT Animations.
Used the drive while on the road on my 17″ MacBookPro and then back at the office on our MacPro 2.66ghz w/5 gigs of RAM. I am using the 200gig 7200rpm G-Raid Mini and would strongly recommend only using the 7200rpm mini. It’s more expensive, but if you’re cutting HDV, you’ll need the speed. We’ve been using G-Raid drives since the first day they were released and the mini provides identical perfornmance, and not having to plug it in while editing on planes and in our production van is a huge plus.
