I am trying to put together a “road package” final cut system so I can cut some things on the road. I have a 17 inch macpro book and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the G raid MINI drives. They basically make two, both powered by the computer. One is 160 gigs but at 5400 rpms the other is 100 gigs but comes at 7200 rpms. Both are avil with FW 800 ports.

Opinions? And how much hdv do you think one would hold? What’s the down side?

    Jeff,

Since HDV and DV have almost exactly the same storage requirements, and since DV requires 13gb per hour, how much HDV would fit on a 100gb hard drive?

The G-Raid Mini is awesome. Just finished cutting a project shot and edited in XDCamHD 30fps @ 35mbps and the drive held up. In addition to the 90 minutes of XDCam footage, we also had 10 minutes of HDV greenscreen footage at 1080i60. The final piece was 12 minutes long and incorporated several minutes worth of title animations created in After Effects and delivered as uncompressed QT Animations.

Used the drive while on the road on my 17″ MacBookPro and then back at the office on our MacPro 2.66ghz w/5 gigs of RAM. I am using the 200gig 7200rpm G-Raid Mini and would strongly recommend only using the 7200rpm mini. It’s more expensive, but if you’re cutting HDV, you’ll need the speed. We’ve been using G-Raid drives since the first day they were released and the mini provides identical perfornmance, and not having to plug it in while editing on planes and in our production van is a huge plus.
