January 10, 2009 at 1:15 am in reply to: HDV clips in DV timeline – Doesn’t scale properly?

    Thanks Lee and Chris,

The threa dyou posted Lee was helpful. It confirmed I was not too crazy after all.

What is odd is that when importing a clip into the timeline that FCP automatically scales it to 50% and adjusts it’s aspect ratio to -12.5. But even more odd is that when I import a HDV clip to the DV timeline it adds those settings in the motion tab but does NOT add the shift field filter.

Some of the clips have the shift field (+1) filter and some don’t. I can’t tell a difference when previewing on my monitor though.

This sequence is a multicam and I have not had much experience in editing these so I am stuck for now. Your screenshot was very clearly representative of my exact problem.

Should the Shift Field filter for HDV clips in a lower field sequence (DV NTSC) have any visible difference on playback? Even from Firewire>XL2>Composite>TV?

January 9, 2009 at 6:48 pm in reply to: Interlaced/None PNG for menu backdrop – DVD SP

    Hi Noah,

Thanks for replying. While PNG is compressed it is a lossless codec and doesn’t result in visual degradation. It uses “deflate” to do it’s “zipping”.

I just realized that the interlaced setting in PNG is more of a progressive download feature and has nothing to do with NTSC interlacing.

So even though it is a lossless codec does DVD SP not handle this correctly? Or maybe it cannot handle the interlaced option(progressive download) I checked. Of course now that I know this I will leave it unchecked but I will also try your advice and just use a flattened PSD and see if that helps any!

    Thanks again for your input!

January 9, 2009 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Will replicator accept HDD of *.img?

    Hey Lucas,

Thanks for all your feedback. I talked to the replicator just moments ago and he said I could upload a file and they could use a software we provide (for PC) to do a MD5 Checksum on the file.

I will make a DDP 2.10 and use Dropbox’s public folder to upload the image and give them a link. Still need to find out which checksum tool to use.

Lucas, do you guys use a checksum for disc images?

    Thanks Lucas

I was going to deliver them a bare drive since we have an docking station that accepts bare drives.

Should they be able to read this or should I send the USB 2.0/eSata docking station along with it?

    Thanks for your feedback.

I am using DVD Studio Pro. It gives me the option of *.cmf 1.00, *.ddp 2.00 and 2.10.

I guess that will be the preference of the replicator.

We have an extra drive I can part with for a bit. Am I correct in assuming this would be the ideal delivery format?

    Cheers

  • Thanks for the feedback Shane. I looked up your profile and ordered your “Getting Organized in Final Cut Pro by Shane Ross: A Broadcast Editor Shares Editing Set-Up Secrets” yesterday.

I can’t wait to jump in to your experience bank!

    Thanks for your help!

  • Hi David,

Thanks so much for the reply. I would have replied back yesterday but I had a stomach illness.

I don’t know what happened but after further investigation and a few attempts at outputting some segments in the newly created HDV timeline the Pro res export looked horrible and I found that somehow the people who originally shot the video all had HD cameras but shot some in DV (very few) and most in HDV.

So that is why the editor had that one sequence as DV and all the others as HDV. Now I would like to ask for some advice as to how to output that mixed HDV/DV sequence before I bring it into compressor for the Mpeg/AC3 conversion. Should I use HDV export, AIC, ProRes or DV and then go to Mpeg? I would think that if take the sequence straight to HDV then the HDV segments will look horrible.

I also saw that you offer consulting services. I may be calling you soon as I am looking for a few experts I can call on occasion when I get in a bind.

I just read your bio , then followed to your website and watched your Ron Paul interview on Gold and Silver.

  • Hi Shane,

Thanks for the quick reply. This worked for a few of the clips in the timeline but not everything. Especially the slides that were used.

    Any other thoughts?

December 17, 2008 at 10:04 pm in reply to: Suggestions for organizing my footage

I have been trying to find a way to attach metadata to all my clips and I finally realized that the people who design file formats seem to have completely forgot to allow for metadata.

Anyways, the only real way to attach metadata to the clips is in the file names. I have been naming my files with as much info as possible. I also have the date on the front.

    Here is an example.

    20081031-cessna-172-first-lesson-new-jersey-cloudy-windy.mov

You can use tags on a Mac but the metadata does not transcend the computer. If a file gets ftp’d somewhere the metadata is gone.

Anyways, I am interested in other replies. I am still trying to figure this stuff out!

  • Hey Rafael,

I just checked out the video on your website! Very nice work buddy!
