Not yet, and you will effectively end up needing 100+ Mbps storage if you consider the fact that the ProRes file will be 4 times the size of the original file + the original file at 24 Mbps.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon. I know it took a while for good native Mpeg 2 editing to be had. H.264 isn’t far off.

You will need all the screenage you can get!

Get the best you can afford right now because in a year it won’t seem like much.

The new OS, Snow Leopard, and the new FCS will be able to leverage more power from the books and boxes.

If you want a raid card though DO NOT buy Apples, it sucks and costs more.

Get a CalDigit. I have a CalDigit running 4 – 1.5 TB seagates right now and it is an effective 4.2 TB’s and is only 30% full. I get about 300 MBps+ read and write in Raid 5.

    Sweet setup!

Also, the Drobo looks cool but does not have eSata. Big marketing mistake.

Yeah, right now FCP doesn’t really do much with all the extra processors. You should have seen my face when I looked at the activity monitor when rendering a timeline and saw only 30% of my 8 cores being used. I spent hours on the phone with Apple and they never admitted to me that it can’t use it. I had to find out the hard way.

But, it will in the future. It is so odd, I keep telling myself that the machine will only get faster. Not everyday you hear that!

April 10, 2009 at 5:27 am in reply to: those nifty little ACVHD cameras – editing on FCP?

I have one of those little AVCHD cammies. It is a Canon HF10. I love it because I can carry it in my backpack and I even got a nice little gorillapod and rode videomic for it. It sucks because of it’s lack of manual control. Anyways, pic looks great on a HD tv and everywhere else BUT Quicktime cannot even play the files back.

You must ingest them into FCP with the ProRes 422 codec which isn’t bad EXCEPT for the fact that now you are left with the original file PLUS a file that is 4 times the size of the original!!!

Talk about eating up some disk space!! Now, I bought it knowing full well that was the case AND in hopes that Apple would eventually offer native support for this. I see no reason why an 8 core Mac shouldn’t be able to handle this with ease.

Right now FCP can’t use all the power it has available. Snow Leopard is our only hope 🙂

So, if you buy one just know that you will essentially be needing 100Mbit/per second of space to effectively edit your video UNTIL Apple fixes FCP.

    Cheers,

    Elijah

Glad to see you got it worked out. Just wanted to add that choosing ProRes 422 is a much better option than Animation unless you need an alpha channel on export.

File size is way better and quality is near identical. I learned that from these forums and thought I would pass it on.

[Zach Love] “One more thing, unless you already own FCS, I would say wait a few weeks. There is a fairly good chance that Apple will announce a new Final Cut Studio at NAB in April.”

That would be nice! I was guessing it would be after Snow Leopard is out, ya know Grand Central (power).

    Great advice by Tom!

I have been learning FCS for the past 6 months or so and I want to add that just buying a computer and software is only part of the investment.

The rest is massive time investment and good training materials/classes.

I would budget a good $1,000+ for training if you want to expedite your learning curve.

    Cheers,

    Elijah

  • Also what is the best way to trim just one frame. I am going to try mpeg streamclip but if anyone has some wisdom for the fastest way to do this that would be great. I assume compressor would recompress the video.
