I’m an editor who has always gotten equipment through the company I was working for at the time. But my freelance work is starting to pick up and I want to set up my own editing system so I can work on projects from home. I’m looking to buy a Mac book pro but want to make sure I get what I need to run FCP smoothly. Want to see what people would recommend as far as RAM, Processor speed etc. Is there a big enough difference between the 15″ and the 17″ to warrant buying the bigger one? Should I get any additional add ons to the comp – like extra ram, video cards of some kind? I plan on installing FCP Studio 2, After Effects and Adobe Creative suite.
    Any advice is much appreciated.

Which ever you get, I’d suggest 4GB of RAM. I think that the 8GB if you go with the 17″ isn’t worth the extra $1000.

I really like the 15″ size, but if I were editing all day on it, I’d probably go with the 17″ instead.

    Any processor will work fine.

You will need all the screenage you can get!

Get the best you can afford right now because in a year it won’t seem like much.

The new OS, Snow Leopard, and the new FCS will be able to leverage more power from the books and boxes.

If you don’t absolutely need a laptop, a Mac Pro offers way more bang for the buck than a Macbook Pro.
