Check your foreground and background colors. The filter uses the FG and BG colors that were set when invoked.

What gradient are you applying to the text layer? When you apply Gradient Overlay it will fill the text with color from the gradient. You can still change text color, but it will not be visible because the gradient colors are being overlaid on the text.

What happens if you use contact sheet with zero spacing between columns and rows and no label? File/Automate/ContactSheetII (in CS3)

Try using a solid color for the dark color. On a separate layer above, use white (or light color) to transparent gradients.

To get Targa with Alpha versus Transparency you need to use the Photoshop 7 plug-in. In Photoshop 7 Targa was changed to use alpha instead of transparency, but we got a huge number of complaints about the behavior change and had to change it back in 7.01. The plug-in will work in later versions of the application. If running CS3 on Leopard it requires running under Rosetta to get the plug-in to work. If you are using CS3 you can also use Render Video and render a QuickTime Targa image sequence of a single frame to get the desired behavior.

What are your loop settings set to? Setting to once should work for what you want. Does the file you created play correctly in Photoshop or your web browser?

I’m not quite following what is causing the issue you are having. If you have CS3 Extended,I would recommend using the timeline animation with keyframes instead of using the frame based animation. It will give you greater flexibility animating individual layers. Otherwise try doing the movement animation before doing the opacity in framebased animation.

Photoshop only supports monochrome brush tips. You might be able to do some of what you need using the Pattern Stamp brush with Aligned disabled if you create a series of patterns of the trees.
