In fact, if you install Movie Studio, Vegas will ALSO read AC-3 audio!

In all honesty, the two don’t really go together. The “Why Vegas” should be on the merits of Vegas – not because they’re using a Sony camera.

There are several companies that will build you a Vegas workstation. You might check at VideoGuys to see a system they built and/or see a list of possible vendors. Another that comes to mind is Boxx.
Tech support comes directly through Sony. You can also get a lot of support on the forums (like this one).

I would not totally agree with this statement. I know it could be better but I definitely would not rate it as “terrible”. Plus, as I mentioned above, you have all the great forums for help as well.

It should work. The only way to know 100% is to test it. I do virtually all my editing on a laptop now.

You really need to find a way to get it captured via firewire – even if that means getting something like the Canopus ADVC-100 convertor (or something of that nature) which can handle both NTSC and PAL converting analog to firewire.

It CAN decode it just fine – IF you can provide it the proper codec. Apparently you have a codec of the type that the other applications use but not one of the type that Vegas uses.
Can you load it in the other application and the output it as standard DV-AVI instead of whatever format it is in now?

Can you just recapture in Vegas? Otherwise you’ll need to find the proper codec to install to let Vegas decode those files.

Have you possibly clicked on the Split Screen View button above the preview screen? If yes, turn that off.

You say you rendered to the MPEG2 codec – but you don’t say what which preset you used or whether you changed any of the settings under “Custom”.
