I captured some AVI from Video8 sources, and have them stored om my disk. I have edited them in Media Studio 8 – downloaded the beta, didn’t like it. They were captured with Pinnacle Studio and a capture card. When I try to open them in Vegas I get an error saying the Video stream can not be determined.

YAAI says that my video stream is YUY2 – Raw, uncompressed YUV 4:2:2

    Any ideas?

Can you just recapture in Vegas? Otherwise you’ll need to find the proper codec to install to let Vegas decode those files.

Yes, if I remember correctly, Pinnacle and that card of theirs is a properity format read only by their products and Adobe Premiere.

As mentioned above. Re-capture them in Vegas.

Sadly recapturing is not possible, the originals have gone back to Norway, and I will not be able to get my hands on those for a while.

I am a little surprised that Vegas can not determine the video stream since any other application I have on my PC can. I can play them in Windows Media Player, I can edit them in ULead Media Studio Pro, I can edit them in Windows Movie Maker and I can edit them in ULead Video Studio. Why is it that Vegas can not decode what the other applications can?

It CAN decode it just fine – IF you can provide it the proper codec. Apparently you have a codec of the type that the other applications use but not one of the type that Vegas uses.

Can you load it in the other application and the output it as standard DV-AVI instead of whatever format it is in now?

I may ask the guys in Norway to send me the movies and camcorder again and recapture in Vegas. The Pinnacle stuff has been a pain, and it looks like all of the audio is out of sync. I only had access to the movies for a short while while I had visitors here, and just captured all I could in a hurry. Since it was a PAL Video8 camcorder I couldn’t get it to work passthrough with my NTSC DV camcorder, so I bought this Pinnacle card and captured everything in a hurry with Studio 9… Seems it would be best to do it all again 🙂 Oh well…

You really need to find a way to get it captured via firewire – even if that means getting something like the Canopus ADVC-100 convertor (or something of that nature) which can handle both NTSC and PAL converting analog to firewire.
