I use the timeline unless I know I want to select a small segment of a clip to fill a specific hole on the timeline. 99% of my editing is done directly on the timeline.

You can easily do that with a script. I use Excalibur to do that.

Basically, you’d do something like this:

OFXStringParameter tparm = (OFXStringParameter)gEffect.OFXEffect.FindParameterByName(“Text”);

rtfSwapText.Rtf = tparm.Value;
rtfSwapText.Text = ReplaceText;
tparm.Value = rtfSwapText.Rtf;

As I mentioned, Sony Titles & Text is an OpenFX titler. The only other OpenFX titler I know is NewBlue Titler Pro.

With the DirectX plugins, you can only set a preset. With the OpenFX plugins (i.e. Sony Titles & Text for example), you can set the text separately.

Do you have “split screen view” turned on? It’s one of the buttons above the preview screen. It’s probably on and set to “bypass effects”.

Press “U” and then delete. That will “ungroup” it from the rest of the events.
