First of all, you’re limited to an app that can handle AVCHD. As you’ve said, Vegas can. I’m not sure what other ones do, though. As far as “easy to use”, I think Vegas is. However I don’t know if YOU will think Vegas is. There’s lots of tutorials available if you want to look at Vegas.

I never use QT for output. The few times I have used QT I’ve not really been happy. So I stick with DV-AVI, MPEG2, and WMV for the most part.
As for Vegas Pro vs. Vegas Movie Studio, Vegas Pro operates the same but has many more features.

I wouldn’t install a “codec pack”. In fact, I’d probably restore back to before you installed this codec and then look here:

Yes. Open Vegas TWICE and arrange them so you can see both Project Medias. Now drag the sub-clips (or even sub folders) from one instance to the other. If you have named the sub-clips, you’ll lose the names.

Yep, that confirms what I said. Download and install an MJPEG codec and it will work fine. If you do a search in the two Vegas forums here on the Cow, I’m sure you will find some links to an MJPEG codec.
Vegas Pro 8 now includes the ability to read MJPEG files so I would guess the Movie Studio versions will probably also get that ability.

Since it’s from a digital STILL camera, there’s a good chance it needs an MJPEG codec to open. Some still cameras now do MPEG4, though. You could download an MJPEG codec and see if it works. Or use something like “GSpot” to tell you what codec is used.

If it won’t show you the video then you don’t have the proper video codec installed for that type of video. “AVI” is just a wrapper that can hold many different types of video. You have a file that you don’t have a codec for. You need to figure out what codec was used and get the proper codec installed. What’s the source of the file?

I had a png with a transparent background on track 1 and another full screen png on track 2. Track 2 was never blocked (no extra black anywhere) except where it should be no matter what transition I used. I didn’t try them all but I tried several.

I just tried this and everything worked as I expected it to work. I didn’t get any black in the transparent areas. I tried a bunch of different transitions too.

My “backup” has usually been my original tape. You can also use external hard drives – just copy the files to them.
