I was going to ask about this, Shane. On my old G4 DP, there was space for 4 internal drives, which we RAIDed, and the
boot drive was external FW400. You could put the boot drive in an empty optical bay, but the buss was
pretty slow. I’m guessing that the optical buss on the MacPro is much faster, any info on that?
When the new 750g drives get the bugs worked out, a 3TB internal SATAII RAID will look pretty sweet.

I don’t have a lot of scaling comparison experience, but someone I trust has said that AfterFX has much better
scaling than FCP. If you have AE, you might want to do a small test to see for yourself. 320×240 to 720×480
isn’t going to fool a discerning client.

I live in rural Vermont and 768 is the minimum here. We have a locally owned Telephone/Cable company. In other
parts of Vermont, Verizon and the former Adelphia, now Comcast, have much faster bandwidth. The stuff we do is
usually seen by people in many countries and/or parts of the U.S., so we use the 384 minimum. Soemtimes we do a
high and low bandwidth version, 300kbs and 700kbps-1.2mbps.

And in some areas I don’t even see that. In my area DSL is either 1.5mbps or 3mbps with some rare folks with 768kbps but I’m in an urban area where people are near the “hubs.””

The slowest DSL these days is at least 384kbps (with some exceptions).
For that lowest common denominator, we compress video to 300kbps
and audio to 32kbps. The computer doesn’t have much to do with playback
at those rates, it’s the connection speed that counts.

For the highest compatibility with the most people, WM9 is the way to go, as David said (not this Dave, the other one).
If you’re exporting using Sorenson 3, and you haven’t purchased Sorenson SV3Pro, you’re not getting the full quality
of SV. H.264 looks great, but it also means viewers need QT7. Flash ON2VP6 is also great, but viewers need Flash8.
It all depends on your audience. To reach as many viewers as possible, we still do a WM9 and a QT SV3Pro. We also occasionally
do H.264 and/or Flash On2 if we know it can be viewed.
As for exporting out of FCP, we don’t put anything exported out of FCP directly to the web. It all goes through Squeeze,
Compression Master, or even Cleaner (for QTs with SV3Pro).

Do you mean you can’t put their projects on a $200 or less drive for storage and bill them the $200 plus for the time
to move the files off your RAID? I have yet to have a client balk at that. I tell them it’s the cheapest way to keep
their projects for archiving or re-editing (by far). I wouldn’t know how to start to charge for drive space rental, but I think whatever the fee,
it would quickly become more dollars than the $200 drive. You’re willing to transfer their files to a slower
storage-only drive, and in the meantime they’re using your fast, expensive array(s). Do they know that when you delete
the files from your array that it will cost them many times more than a storage drive costs to recapture their files?
Sorry I’m not directly answering your question, but something sounds wrong here, are they stupid? If they’re just ignorant,
then enlighten them.

it may be cheap. He gave it to me to test, but we decided to do the project in language instead.
