I think it would have been hard for Panasonic to announce a portable, battery powered hard drive bigger than 60gigs, until now. Portable notebook drives had gotten up to 100gigs, at slower 4,200 and 5,400 speeds, but when Panny announced the hard drive solution nobody had 7,200 2.5″ drives bigger than 60 gigs. But Seagate *just* announced their 7,200RPM, 2.5″, 100gig drive this week. By the time the camera comes out there will be solutions to at least some of your complaints. I’m guessing P2 card sizes will go way up and prices will come way down by then too. Archiving raw footage, I don’t have an answer (for me) yet.

You’re right Toke! I guess they only want to write it once (albeit a bit early).

They *have* announced the 60gig external hard drive storage (P2 Store?) with battery power. Apple has announced support for MXF. Sounds like all that’s needed is a cable from the drive to the Mac.

[Walter Biscardi] “Panasonic was vague on how we’ll get the P2 cards into the Mac but I’m expecting some sort of external Firewire device like you have for digital camera flash cards where you’ll just transfer the material from the P2 to your drives and start editing. “

Just like this forum, it’s about P2 cards, not one camera! Other cameras are already using P2 cards, nobody mentioned the HVX200 as the forum or list theme (although there’s a lot of talk about it).

    There’s also a new P2 list here: https://groups.yahoo.com/group/FCP_P2
Brought to you by some of the people from the FCP-L list; if it’s anything like the FCP-L don’t go there with
“how do you focus a camera?” kind of questions, you’ll get eaten alive. 🙂

No argument there. I’ve said in a lot of places, including this forum, that AJA has the best Customer Support. Notice that the half answer came from their Sales Department. I’ve always kind of thought the “why you young pups don’t know how lucky you are. When I was your age I walked through 3 feet of snow to get to my studio, where I had $500,000 worth of equipment that couldn’t do half of what your little $1,000 set up can do. So quit your whining” kind of comments were silly, when the point is often not what something cost, but simply what’s being promised and what’s being delivered. I personally didn’t buy my IO because of the promised Control Panel. It’s a great product without it. My comments are more about not promising (again and again) what you don’t deliver.
Ed, who is too damn old too 🙂

[Mark Tyson] “Perhaps I’m just too damn old, but…I for one am eternally grateful to AJA for making a piece of gear that just works, costs essentially nothing (I come from the days of big iron) and has great customer service. My $10,000 FCP suite kicks the hell out of any other suite I’ve ever owned (some costing upwards $500,000) and that is in no small measure due to the wonder of the AJA i/o. Just one person’s opinion. “

  • Good point. That will balance things out some.

[Luis Caffesse] “When you consider all the time you would have spent logging and capturing that footage had you shot on tape, the time spent archiving doesn’t seem all that bad. “

Well, I got my IO *after* the control panel was announced. And I think it’s perfectly legitimate to bring it up days before NAB. It’s AJA who’s been promising but not delivering for all this time. The least they can do is answer the question “what happened? where is it?”
    Ed

If you do a search in the archives about it, it’s kind of comical to see the “AJA told me next month” posts in May, July, September, December. This from the AJA sales dept. in February “Now, Io and Io LA users can record from most unstable analog signals that previously would not be accepted. This firmware release is also the first step towards the long-awaited Io Control Panel, which is in final development and should be available very, very soon! (more in the next few weeks as we approach it
