If people corrected themselves every time I’ve seen just 2 common
ignorant uses of spelling, your instead of you’re, or loose instead of lose,
the internet would slow to a crawl from the bandwidth used. 🙂

All good thoughts on the pros and cons, and pretty much my thinking. The only thing I’d add
is that: I travel a lot, and I sometimes edit on location, or at least somewhere in the country
I’m working in. I try to take advantage of the fact that a client has paid me to go to Italy or Spain,
or Slovakia, so I stay a little longer for fun, and I justify it by doing some rough editing while there.
I bring my 17″ PB, a 2 drive FW RAID, if we’re shooting Beta an AJA IOLA, and a 9″ LCD monitor
that’s VGA, NTSC/PAL. I use it as a field monitor on the shoot, then I can plug it in to the laptop
for more real estate for editing, and plugged in to the AJA, it’s a video monitor (NTSC or PAL).
If the flight is long or boring I bring out the PB and watch one of the several films or TV shows
I have loaded (Sopranos, Six Feet Under, etc.), being very careful to remember the R rating of some
of the films/TV on my G rated flight. The only problem I have is when the person in the seat in front of me
reclines. On some planes, that ends my viewing on a 17″ PB.

And it’s very well spelled out in the manual, in the FCP on-line help, and in thousands of previous posts to this forum.
A search won’t waste people’s time, and will get you the answer much, much faster.
Ed (guess what one of my pet peeves is?) -
You can get Flip4Mac StudioPro to compress from Compressor (or FCP and other QT based programs, including Cleaner) to WM9.
If you’re using Cleaner 6 on a Mac you can’t do WM9 without Flip4Mac. For the QT, if you compress a streaming file, you need to upload
it to a streaming server. For a file you’ll be putting up on an HTTP server you can compress it as a progressive download (enable fast start)
so it will start playing as soon as enough of it is downloaded, you don’t have to wait for the file to completely download first. Finally, RealPlayer? Yuk!

I shot an hour and a half multicam lecture with slides on DVCPro50(16:9 30p); imported via firewire into FCP5; and now I’m exporting for multiple web platforms.
PC – WMP
The WMP file needs to be WM9 at around 1.5-2mbps, at 720×480, 29.97 fps, with never a spike in data rates to over 3mbps.I can’t use Compressor for this right? I have to use Cleaner? But I have to export something out of FCP in order for Cleaner to encode to WMP? For the above specs, is there a preset possible in Cleaner? I need the video big enough for viewing the powerpoint slides I edited into the show. The 50% of original was fine but resolution needed to be good.
Mac – QT
An hour and a half show… So this is only a streaming video not a download? the hour and a half QT800Download I made last night for five hours at 50% of original size is 450MB… People would be downloading that for a year or two but the QT300DL @ 25% is too small to read the fonts… 50% of original is the minimum I can use and I don’t know what the QT300DL @ 50% of Original is going to look like yet because it hasn’t finished encoding yet…SO….can someone just tell me what QuickTime setting to use?? Thanks. And I know I should choose Streaming not Download Fast start? or Hinted Streaming?Also what about RealPlayer? Compressor doesn’t do that does it? I have to use Cleaner again? “

Do you have fast enough drives to go 10 bit? If you haven’t digitized footage yet, I would suggest bringing the
whole thing in as 10 bit Uncompressed. The one and only advantage of 10 bit (not 8 because you’ll run into banding problems)
is that it makes graphics look very good with DV. If you already have the footage on your hard drives, editing in DV and bringing it
into a 10 bit sequence will still help, but you’ll have to render the entire sequence when you’re done.

X-rays don’t hurt hard drive data. But there is some concern that the new MRI baggage checking machines might. They use
magnetic resonance to peek into your baggage. Some people think it’s enough magnetism to screw with your magnetic hard drive.
I travel overseas a lot and always carry my 2 drive hard drive array on board in my laptop case. I don’t know for sure that it’s
necessary, but I don’t want it stolen or corrupted.

Yes it would. Quite often though, I need to keep working in FCP while encoding, so I’ll export out of FCP, compress in Compression Master,
and edit another sequence in FCP at the same time. I also like the preview and filters available in compressors.
Ed[Post Office Video] “Just wondering if it wouldn’t be simpler to export from FCP directly into WM9 via Flip4Mac. I send 384k WMV’s to my customers every day this way and they love it. Since Flip4Mac works as a quicktime plugin you can also use Compressor to batch process if you prefer.”

If the photographer has releases from them that allow him/her to give you the right to use them, sure.
Unless, of course, the photos are of crowd scenes (public places), no release needed in those cases. Could you imagine having to get
releases from everyone in all the photos and films in midtown Manhattan with thousands of people walking down the street?

I think it was an issue with v4. We have 4.3 and it works fine, so somewhere in between they must have fixed it.
