there are a few threads in the archives on this….but this is what I do…

Record black onto a VHS. Then capture it into your machine while rewinding the VCR. So you get the horizontal lines with some noise and crap over black. Layer this up and play with some transfer modes.

Also, play around with different ways of rewinding the footage, rather than just a straight time remap. Maybe posterise time or echo?

Maybe distort the footage a bit while it is rewinding….A simple one could be the wave warp at 90 degrees stretching in and out real fast.

ummmmmm…..maybe wiggler the position a little. Maybe wiggler some blur….OR, with the wave warp make a black/white matte and use it as a displacement map and compund blur at the same time.

    Adjust curves/levels?

    ……..hope this helps……….

July 28, 2005 at 6:24 am in reply to: please recommend a blackmagic card for me…..

thanks heaps for your help. So….
I will only ever be capturing SDI, never ever a need for analogue. So if i get a cheaper unit, will I lose any other features besides the anologue in/outs?

Also, if I was to look at a HD card will I lose any of the SD features/quality? HD isn’t a “need” but could be handy in future. We have one betacamHD machine….but no cameras 🙁

Also…sorry for all the questions….but what sort of hard drive setup would I need to handle capturing HD?

Luke…can you recommend a blackmagic reseller in Australia (or more specifically Canberra, Australia)

    Cheers for the help,
    Michael

there is a txt document in your “support files” folder of the installation directory called “interpretation rules.txt”. Tweaking this file can change how AE interprets footage and also force interpretation rules for different types of files.

Well, I don’t have to be worried about transmitting. It is just for viewing on some ericsson K750i phones. THe vision will just be copied onto the phone via USB.

I’m working on a PC and becuase it is a one off job I don’t want to spend big money. It doesn’t have to be superior quality, but now I am using “mpegable x4 live” and the quality is really bad.

Do you know if there is a way I can just render out of AE, PPro or Media Cleaner in a compatible format?

I will give that a go, thanks. I’m sure my source is fine as it was shot on digibeta and exists as an uncompressed file.

  • when we go Help->About both of us have CS and it says version 3.0

“InDesignCS has had two incremental upgrades. It could be just that” – what do you mean? and how can I tell?

I’m not sure if we are on the same platform. That could be it.

  • check to COW tutorials. One came up not too long ago that was making a TV screen. Some of the techniques would probably help you.

    my 2 cents –
    A subtle glow can help.
For scan lines, I just use the venetian blinds effect on a solid. Set to 50% transition, and make the width pretty small. I think this saves time rather than making a photoshop file.
