Another good thought. The cable is routed internally, however it’s an aluminum, not carbon fiber, pole. When I do my next test, assuming I can still hear the station, I’ll bypass the pole and plug the cable directly into the mic to see if that makes a difference.

Based on what you said, it’s balanced, Rennie. The cable is 25′ and plugs right into the XLR connector on the camera with the other end directly into the mic. NEVER been stepped on. ALWAYS perfectly coiled afterwards. And this has never happened in the year and a half that I’ve been using it. Perhaps I was too close to some antenna and I just need a cable with a thicker sheath in the odd chance it happens again.

I’m going to go back to the studio in a couple days and see if I get the same problem.

To answer your other question, though, the mic is suspended in a shock mount on a K-Tek 9′ boom pole.

Great idea, Chris. So, if I head to a Sam Ash or Guitar Center and ask for a balanced cable (I’ll bring in what I currently use to confirm that it’s NOT balanced), that should do the trick in this location? And if that doesn’t work, what would I wrap with the foil – the connector at the XLR input of the camera?

Thanks, Tom. I’ll try a different mic cable, though I use this one all the time without (until this instance) any difficulty.

Not sure what you’re considering a “large” suitcase. Something collapsable isn’t going to be high quality. What’s your budget? If you get your tripod through a pro video store chances are they can also sell you a shipping case. They’re shipped all the time. Just check it on like you do your baggage.

Good to know for future reference. The Lenmar’s are 5400 mAh, so I’m not too far off from that. Knowing DVXUser sponsored this other battery gives me confidence, even though I don’t know who the manufacturer is.

I’ve never heard of resetting the battery. Possibly charging it overnight and then depleting it completely a couple times. I don’t know.

I purchased two new ones today. Not happy at all that the Panasonic one lasted just over a year – so I bought a couple by Lenmar that have a 3-yr. warranty and were only $99 each (vs. $175 or so for the Panny’s). They were highly recommended by Samy’s, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken the risk.

Thanks Richard. You’re the only one who weighed in, so I won’t waste my time trying to charge it again. Samy’s Camera tomorrow for two new ones.

    Best,

There was no condescending attitude, Steve.

Your earlier statements led me to believe that it was abnormal to retain a copy of your work. I truly felt sorry for the situation you were in.

However, you’ve just confirmed that’s not always the case, which is all I was pointing out to begin with.

Especially when you’re talking about a hard drive that can fail, not only do I keep a copy, but my clients are generally appreciative of the extra backup. And I was even called on once to see if I could provide the footage again when an inept editor screwed up the original drive. They were grateful I could do so.

I’ve got copies of most everything I’ve shot.

But even when tape was around, I could always get a copy of the final product. It sounds like all that is against the norm for you, though. Sorry to hear that.
