Howdy,
Set the text’s Layout Method parameter to ‘Path’ and then adjust the path points so that they are vertical. Then uncheck the ‘Align to Path’ option and adjust the tracking to control the now-vertical spacing.

Howdy,
Set the render quality to ‘Best’. This can be done in the View menu of the toolbar or in the export settings in the Export dialog.
Best mode really slows things down, though, so I would only turn it on when exporting.

Howdy,
You can use a shape as the basis for a Motion Path behavior, but all the points on shapes are always coplanar, so you can’t do stuff like spirals, etc. To get a true 3D motion path, you have you create it using the Motion Path behavior or by keyframing the Position channel.

The retiming behaviors respect the blending mode set on the layer.

What resolution are the images? If they’re greater than the max texture size of your GPU, they will get cropped and scaled to fit. The largest available size is 4096×4096.

Ah, it didn’t occur to me to ask what type of media you’re using. If you pick the Broadcast HD 1080i60 preset, you’re getting a 1920×1080 project, which should be square. If your footage is XDCAM- or HDV-originated, then it’s really 1440×1080 and uses a 1.33 aspect ratio. Additionally, DVCPRO HD uses 1280×1080 at a 1.50 aspect ratio. If your footage originates from one of those formats, then you’ll want to pick the appropriate preset.

Howdy,
Are you sure that the projects are being set to a square pixel aspect ratio? Check the project settings (Cmd+K) to confirm. Do you have the ‘Correct for Aspect Ratio’ option ebabled in the Canvas View menu (found below the toolbar)? That tells the Canvas to compensate for the aspect ratio of the project, and would explain why your output preview is OK but the Canvas is not.

By “procedural”, I mean this: say you have project A and project B. When you embed project A inside project B, you’re making a reference. If someone were to make changes to A, you would see them reflected in the embedded version in B.
Motion projects embedded in an FCP sequence work this way.

Doing a drag-and-drop as you described imports the contents of another project, but it’s not embedded. i.e. it’s not a procedural relationship, it just copy/pastes the stuff into current project.

Howdy,
Motion 2 doesn’t have the full 3D transforms that can be found in Motion 3, but it does have the Basic 3D filter, which allows for X,Y,Z rotation of an image. The filter uses the center of the image as the pivot point, though, so if you want a non-centered pivot, just nest the image in a larger, fixed-rez layer and apply the filter to the layer. The layer is padded out with empty space so that its center is wherever you want the pivot to be on the image.
Please note that layers have been renamed to “groups” in Motion 3. Ah, how confusing all this can be to describe when the names are so generalized and generic.
