March 3, 2006 at 6:02 pm in reply to: Flicker when applying Drop Shadow to clips with Mask Shape and Matte Feather filters appliedI saw a similar unwanted effect with the same footage flow from FCP HD to 5.0. If I recall my fix was to put a slug on the uppermost track over the effect area and turn the opacity to 0. The slug is invisible but it did seem to fix the problem, as I remember.

Hopefully Avid won’t mess up the excellent tech support Medea has always has by charging for tech support calls or something similar. I’ve dealt with Chad and others on tech support issues over the last several years and found them to always be very helpful. Avid has a tendency to eliminate products when they buy other companies (Cinewave, etc.) and keep only those products which will help their line of editing equipment. They have now purchased another company with a big tie to Final Cut Pro users. Does this mean that FCP users won’t be able to purchase the Medeas because they won’t be supported? I urged the purchase of several Medeas for my former employer based on the fact the drives were supported for the Accom StrataSphere and then Final Cut Pro. I’ve never liked Avid as a company and have never been impressed by their large user base. Just because something is big doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best. I have always avoided buying anything with an Avid name on it so I guess the Avid VideoRaids won’t be in any future purchase recommendations.

February 24, 2006 at 4:03 pm in reply to: How To: Capture at a different codec than the native?Nick is probably capturing to DVCPro 50 to save some storage space as I once was doing when I worked on his system. DVCPro 50 will give you roughly double the storage capacity over uncompressed and the quality isn’t that bad. Uncompressed is better of course since it doesn’t recompress the footage. The only disadvantage for DVCPro 50 is that you won’t be able to caption the edited program with MacCaption. If captions aren’t going to enter into the project, then DVCPro 50 should be fine. Like Walter said be sure the capture preset and the timeline preset match so you won’t have to render the footage after placing it on the timeline.

Quicktime files are rendered with the settings you chose when you generate the file. The playback settings don’t enter into the QT movie settings when the movie is made.

Ok, figures out the flashing, the closed caption file size was way too big for the processor to handle. We have a small fine now, and it works fine…until I try edit to tape…Then somewhere between my timeline and the Master tape, the 6 lines of video with the captions are lost.
It looks fine when I preview it from the timeline, but when I edit to tape, the 6 lines of video dissapear. Any ideas?Doug Olin

Ignore my previous post as the workflow you are using is the one recommended by the Maccaption manufacturer.
Do the flashing lines appear at the same point in the video every time? Do they still appear after you render the section where they are showing up? Have you tried putting a black video with 0% opacity on the video track above the captions? That’s an old workaround which might help.

Would it be possible to export the captioned QT movie as a full frame video with the captions added? Could you then use the full frame QT to place on the timeline and then export to tape?

In the setup you choose make sure SDI video is selected with analog audio. You can save the custom setup with a name that’s easy to spot like “8 bit SDI analog audio” or something like that.

You have selected insert video and audio on the little icons in the lower right corner of the edit to tape window, I presume. Can you see the video when the machine is patched to the output of the FCP video? Could the machine be in the wrong input or not have video patched to it?
What type of machine are you using & what video IO for FCP?

July 19, 2005 at 9:33 pm in reply to: One-half of my video storage is missing – an 18 month sagaWe have 3 Medea VideoRaid RT3X systems that occasionally exhibit similar behavior where half of the unit will unmount. Usually a reboot will solve the problem but not always. One thing I’ve tried that sometimes works is to use the Atto Config control panel and see if it can rescan the SCSI bus to mount both halves of the Medea. We are using the Atto UL4D with the latest drivers and firmware and the latest version of the Atto control panel.
