Funny how Medea drives are suddenly not qualified for FCP.

    Hmmm…

Yeah, and I love how AVID “launches” the VideoRAID family since that family of products has been around for years.

And Avid has been telling people from day 1 that non-Avid drives are not qualified for use with Avid systems and now a simple relabelling from Medea VideoRAID to Avid VideoRAID suddenly qualifies it.

Hopefully Avid won’t mess up the excellent tech support Medea has always has by charging for tech support calls or something similar. I’ve dealt with Chad and others on tech support issues over the last several years and found them to always be very helpful. Avid has a tendency to eliminate products when they buy other companies (Cinewave, etc.) and keep only those products which will help their line of editing equipment. They have now purchased another company with a big tie to Final Cut Pro users. Does this mean that FCP users won’t be able to purchase the Medeas because they won’t be supported? I urged the purchase of several Medeas for my former employer based on the fact the drives were supported for the Accom StrataSphere and then Final Cut Pro. I’ve never liked Avid as a company and have never been impressed by their large user base. Just because something is big doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best. I have always avoided buying anything with an Avid name on it so I guess the Avid VideoRaids won’t be in any future purchase recommendations.

Just got off the phone with Don McDonnel at Medea and I have to say, I’m feeling very good about what is happening there right now.

Tech support service is about to get even better, which is a good thing. Medea will still be selling the Medea product line, they are not changing all the naming over to AVID. The same engineering / testing folks like Dan DeBruno are still going to be there and in fact they are going to be adding more engineering folks to the team to better respond to any changes that Apple throws to the OS and the new Intel architecture. You’ll also see a lot more of Medea marketing now as well.

So for initial reactions to the deal after speaking to Don, it’s still going to be the same Medea that we’ve all grown to love over the years. I’m going on 8 years now (maybe 9) that I’ve run Medea drives and have never ever missed a deadline due to a drive related failure. It’s hard to beat that.

And this suprises you, somehow? From the same people who are now bringing you “Avid Liquid”?
