This project was started in 4.5 and is now acting strangely in 5.0. I’m not sure why some of the transitions work but most don’t

  • We have 2 FCP systems. The system I use every day, as the only user, works fine with 10.3.9. The other system is the one with the problems in opening a single FCP project. This one project on the other system is the reason I tried downgrading to 10.3.8.

BTW I tried opening the problem project on the other system today and it wouldn’t open. I’ve trashed preferences, reinstalled FCP and the OS and thrown away all render files but it doesn’t like to open after saving a new version. Any other ideas on causes for this? The project file is about 22 MB and contains many nests and unused footage files. Could the file bloat be causing the opening problems?

  • We have 2 FCP systems running FCP HD. My system is having no problems with 10.3.9 and QT Pro 6.5.2. The other system last week wasn’t able to open certain FCP projects which had been saved the previous day. It would get to about 25% of the file open and then unexpectedly quit. Other projects opened fine but this one project wouldn’t open. We even opened an old version, rerendered and saved again but the next day the new version wouldn’t open. So I downgraded to OS 10.3.8 on that system and it seems to have fixed the problem.

My system has been working fine since 10.3.9 was installed several weeks ago. I haven’t had any problems with FCP or QT files. I haven’t seen any loss of functionalty in FCP. Do all QT files have problems on your systems?

Have you checked the device control settings to make sure the proper setup is active? You didn’t mention what machine control you’re using but with our IO, I have made presets for Betacam SP, DVCPro 50 and D9. I have a separate setting just for a DVCPro edit deck that needs Panasonic RS422 protocol. Make sure your device control setting hasn’t been changed to a different RS422 protocol. The wrong one might disable the insert edit function.

Make sure your RT setting is set to high quality. It sounds like you have it set to low or medium quality. The RT tab is at the left end of the timeline.

  • Can you put in a small patch panel with component in and out and then just change the patch to go to the IO? It seems like you are going to lose some signal strength routing through the various machines. You can either buy premade component or RGB patch cords to connect between the IO and the patch panel or use three BNC cables of equal length. You can probably find all the items you need at Markertek.com or B&H Photo, etc. Looping through the machines doesn’t seem like the best way to go. Tecnec used to make a small 3 or 4 machine router that would do what you need to do. It had video and machine control routing built in and you changed the routing from the front panel. I’m not sure if they still make it or if they even made a component version.

We have a large patch panel bay with all component, composite and SDI signals going through the various patch points. When I want to use a different source, I change the video patch and machine control and load the footage.

You might also try changing your mark in and out timecodes just a few frames. That usually fixes it for me. It seems that FCP doesn’t like certain in points for no apparent reason.

April 27, 2005 at 9:29 pm in reply to: Boris Red newbie needs HELP!

From the FCP generator menu, select Boris Red static for a still title or Boris/Boris Red Generator for a moving effect. Type in your desired duration in the FCP viewer duration box and then place the video on the timeline. Then go to the controls menu and click the Boris Red logo. This will take you into Red where you can create your effect.

Boris Red might not have a solar flare effect. Boris Continuum Complete has many more lighting effects than Red and I would guess there is one in that program. We purchased Cont. Complete to get a Trapcode Shine type of lighting effect. The Cont. Complete can work as a plugin for FCP and Red. The lighting effects seem to rely on the pixel chooser to cast the effects on alpha channel graphics. Overall if you’ve used Red, the Cont. Complete will be similar in the interface.

You will need to reinstall Red and choose the Final Cut Pro plugin option. The default installation doesn’t have the FCP plugin so you will need to choose it. I use Red all the time as a plugin for FCP HD. It sounds like your installation either became corrupted or wasn’t working in the first place. The reinstall doesn’t take that long and it will be a great addition to FCP.
