  • Closed Captioning and flashing lines with FCP.

We have Final Cut pro and “maccaption”, and have started the closed caption saga due to government requirements. The process we go through is as follows…

    1. Export Quick time movie to maccaption.
    2. Add captions.
    3. export another qtm NLE “black video” with the captions.
    4. I then insert the captioned “black” video on the upper most video track I have, crop all but the 1% that holds the captions and away we go…It looks good.

But, I have flashing lines at different times on my video.
It doesn’t matter if the closed captioning is on or off on the broadcast monitor. Is it possible that FCP doesn’t like that long line of video that has been cropped, or is there a setting in FCP for this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Would it be possible to export the captioned QT movie as a full frame video with the captions added? Could you then use the full frame QT to place on the timeline and then export to tape?

Ignore my previous post as the workflow you are using is the one recommended by the Maccaption manufacturer.

Do the flashing lines appear at the same point in the video every time? Do they still appear after you render the section where they are showing up? Have you tried putting a black video with 0% opacity on the video track above the captions? That’s an old workaround which might help.

Ok, figures out the flashing, the closed caption file size was way too big for the processor to handle. We have a small fine now, and it works fine…until I try edit to tape…Then somewhere between my timeline and the Master tape, the 6 lines of video with the captions are lost.
It looks fine when I preview it from the timeline, but when I edit to tape, the 6 lines of video dissapear. Any ideas?

What kind of tape are you using for your master? Your 6 lines could be the difference between ur sequence settings and whatever your tape is, be it betacam or dvcam
