No problem at all. The attached .zip file contains project XML, translated copy to .fcpxml, batch list, and a fresh FCPX library with the project imported.

To clarify, you can use a USB SSD, but use the Thunderbolt/USB C port on the iMac. A Samsung T7 would be plenty fast enough to run Ventura, just make sure the cable is capable of that bandwidth. Cheap USB-C cables can’t handle the load. Better to get a Thunderbolt 3 cable and use that.

Yet another option would be to clone your current install to an external, then update the internal. If anything weird happens, wipe the internal and restore from the clone.

Another option would be to create a boot disk on an external SSD (via Thunderbolt, not USB) with Ventura and your remote stuff, leaving the internal iMac drive as-is.

No worries – XML export, conversion, and import to a FCPX library are included in the .zip. Took a couple of screenshots inside FCP7 so you’d have a reference (they’re in the Source folder).

First things first – how will you be running the remote edit?

I’ve been doing occasional .fcp to XML exports for folks over in the FCPX forum.

If you’ve got a FCP 7 project file that needs exporting to XML (or even XML to .fcpxml to Library), I can help.

Keep in mind I do this as a courtesy and when I’m between projects, so turnaround times can vary.

I zipped a copy of 10.7.x, and tested a few libraries.

Only thing I need to get used to is hitting the icon for Color tab on the inspector – I’m used to double-clicking on an adjustment to open the pane, and now that renames the effect.

Tested a variety of media types, multicam clips, etc. So far, all good! Don’t forget to update Pro Video Codecs. If you need to burn DVDs out of FCP, you’ll want to find a new workflow before updating.

EDIT: I will note that I’m between projects at the moment. Would’ve waited if I were in the middle of something hot.

I certainly wouldn’t mind better mixing tools, but I just don’t need a full DAW attached to my NLE. Others might. I could see maybe a different project type with a ‘mix’ icon, where you get a different interface with faders, channel config, sends, etc. If round-tripping wasn’t such a crapshoot, that alone would be a big improvement.

I still view FCPX in a sort of ‘camera body’ context, where I can build or buy the options I need.

Project consolidation tools are quite another story – Ol’ #7 had pretty good options that I still miss.

Another thing that would help a lot would be comprehensive info in the inspector explaining why that stupid yellow triangle is on my timeline icon in the browser.
