  • Need to restore an old FCP 7 project, for use in FCP X and don’t have FCP 7 anymore…

Posted by Peter Price on January 27, 2019 at 5:54 pm

    Hi all,

I know this might be a dated question. I have not used FCP 7 in quite sometime and moved on sometime in 2012/2013. However I recently came upon a situation where I need to restore an old FCP 7 project, and convert it into an XML friendly format to use in FCP X or Davinci Resolve. But I don’t have an old enough system to run a legacy copy of FCP 7 or a copy of FCP 7 anymore. Am I out of luck or has someone developed a way to convert native fcp files into XML’s without the use of the old FCP 7 software??

I haven’t seen any alternative so, as far as I know, you’ll need to find someone who has FCP7 and can open the project and export the project XML. On the plus side, they shouldn’t need the media so you should be able to email the project file to whoever you find that still has a copy.

    Hey Peter,

I keep a legacy workstation with FCP 7 for just such an emergency.

If you’re willing to send / post the old project file, I’ll convert it.

Hi Doug, I know this post is old but can you convert a Final Cut Pro 7 project to XML for me please?

    Thank you

Sure! Do you just need the XML, or are you planning to bring it into FCPX? If so, the XML will also need to be converted to .fcpxml (can also do that).

The XML files from legacy FCP are NOT compatible with the FCPXML files FCPX requires.

You’d have to use Resolve or X2Pro to get the legacy XML file converted into something FCPX will understand.

You’re thinking of SendToX, which is what I use for that conversion.

X2Pro, audio conversions, right, got the two confused.

Hi Doug, I was curious if you’re still able to convert a Final Cut Pro 7 project to XML for me as well please? It’d be a HUGE life saver!

    Thank you, Austin Wilson

Absolutely. I’ll need the project file of course.

Just standard XML out for PPr import, or would you need .fcpxml?

    Thanks so much Doug!

    I believe I need a FCPXML

I’ll be using the xml to transfer the project to the current FCPX on a MacBook Pro.

I attached the fcp 7 project link below, along with the needed instructions –

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WkYeK11QwUp2wyeIUZ2E8DFuymMFhudW/view?usp=sharing

    -After opening “WANGULA JFK 05-15-20.fcp”,

    >open CUTS folder

The needed XML export is titled “WANGULA NEW SUBTITLES v9-16 to AW 05-15-20”

I truly appreciate your efforts Doug!
