There’s no information here to go on, Guy.

First things first – how will you be running the remote edit?

Mac model, FCP version, and what “remote edit” system are you talking about specifically?

Hi Ben, I have a 2017 27 inch iMac with 40 GB of Ram, and I will install Teridaci to run a remote Avid edit. The Mac is running Catalina but is offering an update to Ventura. I think I explained it badly. The FCP, which is 10.5 is already installed on my own Mac, on which I am a long way in to a FCP project. I am concerned that if I upgrade to Ventura, which I need to install the Teridaci KVM system, my FCP might not work properly and so mess up my FCP project. If it doesn’t then I could upgrade the FCP. Do you reckon the FCP will run OK if I install Ventura? Thanks, Guy

Well, can both Macs run macOS 13 (Ventura)? If so, update them both, then update to FCP 10.7.1 (don’t go to 10.8 until the bug fix is release in a week or two).

But if only one machine can be updated to macOS 13, then obviously stay on macOS 12.

If you need the Avid remote that badly, can you restrict your FCP editing to one machine?

Another option would be to create a boot disk on an external SSD (via Thunderbolt, not USB) with Ventura and your remote stuff, leaving the internal iMac drive as-is.

To clarify, you can use a USB SSD, but use the Thunderbolt/USB C port on the iMac. A Samsung T7 would be plenty fast enough to run Ventura, just make sure the cable is capable of that bandwidth. Cheap USB-C cables can’t handle the load. Better to get a Thunderbolt 3 cable and use that.

Yet another option would be to clone your current install to an external, then update the internal. If anything weird happens, wipe the internal and restore from the clone.

Thanks Ben, Think I might be able to stick to my imac for FCP, thanks for that Cheers Guy

Very good idea, thanks. Currently putting Ventura on an external drive, fingers crossed! Cheers Guy
