I can think of a couple of ways:

– boot the machine in Target Disk Mode (hold the ‘T’ key on startup), and plug it into another Mac
– boot the machine in Single-User Mode, and attack the files from the Terminal

The MacBook Pro has a hardware decoder for H.264, so you’ll definitely want to use the laptop… for this kind of transcoding, have a look at EditReady:

Hey John,
Sounds like you’ve got the VO in the Primary Storyline. You’ve got a couple of options:
1. Lift the VO out of the primary (as a connected clip) and edit as usual
2. Leave the VO where it is, and add your video as connected clips on top (Q)

I almost always go with option 1, fwiw.

You’d likely be better off leaving the .mts files in the AVCHD package… just drop it into EditReady for your ProRes conversion and you retain more metadata, spanned clips are properly identified and reconnected, and you save time not digging those .mts files out of the package. Wins everywhere!

It must have something to do with the way you’ve set up your plugin.

To test, I just built what you described and it behaves properly. To start, I opened Motion and selected the Final Cut Title project option. Added the Scroll Text behavior to the text layer, and changed the text (content, font, outline, drop shadow just for kicks). Saved. Opened FCPX, applied the new Scrolling Text template over a generator background, replaced the text with several lines of gibberish, increased line spacing, alignment, other parameters…. still behaves properly.

Maybe crack that title open in Motion again and double-check everything.

I’m also running current Mojave / FCPX / Motion. Tested on a 2013 MacPro.

As Jeremy and Joe have noted, FCPX does a pretty good job of this, but I’ve also had a few instances where the cadence isn’t right… missing frames followed by duplicate frames. I also used to use Cinema Tools, and more recently, JES Deinterlacer.

In looking for another method to batch a bunch of PF24 clips, I found that Compressor (which I’ve never used for reverse telecine before) actually has a setting in the Quality section of the inspector:

Still haven’t tried it, but definitely worth having a look at if you have a batch of clips that Final Cut misses the cadence on.

The old QuickTime / FCS reference file export is something I’ve used extensively in the distant past, and did save lots of time and drive space. Unfortunately, that functionality is not part of the core media framework and is going away entirely with Catalina.

I’ll also say that more than a few of my old QT reference movies are irretrievably broken due to missing or corrupt render files. Better to export self-contained to future-proof your work.

Coming from you, I’m inclined to believe it. But I can’t find any corroborating evidence anywhere, including Apple’s QuickTime support page… and I’m not in a position to upgrade to Catalina just yet.
