Apologies for jumping in, but I’ve also downloaded the library to investigate as I haven’t seen this particular problem before.

I have had projects behave strangely in other cases where I’ve changed the project’s start TC to prep for bars & tone and output to tape, so thought I’d start there.

Indeed, there is an apparent link to your project’s timecode setting. When I changed the start TC from 23:59:54:12 to 00:00:00:00, everything functioned properly and all red bars disappeared. I was unable to make them return after this change. Changing it back to your original modified start caused all the red bar strangeness return.

*Added for clarity – I saw the red bars immediately upon opening the project. Running the latest Catalina and latest FCPX.

Okay, I did some testing just now. Imported a 2 minute clip of Canon PF24 into a fresh library.

Selected the clip in the browser, and checked the inspector -> Settings… Field Dominance Override was set to Off. I didn’t touch anything there, not even deinterlacing.

I then dropped the entire clip into a 24p timeline, and it was terrible. Choppy playback/duplicate frames, interlacing artifacts, you name it.

Selected the same clip in the timeline and changed the Rate Conform / Frame Sampling from Floor to Nearest Neighbor, and it was damn near perfect. Smooth playback, no duplicate frames or stuttering, and the only thing not quite perfect was a little ghosting of bright green and red LEDs on a quick pan (and only every 5th frame). Nothing you would notice during playback, only when stepping through frames.

My results with Compressor’s Reverse Telecine setting were not good. Still trying some things there, but I’m not hopeful. I really miss JES Deinterlacer.

Something else to consider as well… if you edit 29.97 clips into your 23.976 timeline, you don’t get the option to remove pulldown from export (your project is already 24p).

Best option is to remove the pulldown from those clips before you put anything on the timeline.

You can ‘disable’ the audio portion of your clip crossfade:
– once you expand the audio, extend or shorten the audio track a smidge and the fade disappears. Then you can use the drag handle to set it the way you want (or not!).

The original poster was wondering if he could use it as direct-attached storage for a new Mac Pro.

I don’t think it’s in dispute as to whether or not you could use it as a file server, the question is whether or not it’s worth the time, money, and maintenance.

It’s an old box. Power supply failures are common, motherboard failures are common, outdated OS, networking config, size, noise, power draw….

I mean, sure, if you’ve got a bunch of extra time and money to throw at it, go for it. But if you want something that’s faster, easier, and will be reliable for years, that lovely old 5,1 isn’t part of the equation.

This happens when you import the camera cards (folder copies) directly in FCPX, yes?

I might try re-wrapping the source with EditReady:

You can simply re-wrap, or transcode to another format. And you’ll have the option to add unique identifiers to each card processed.

I’m not sure how far you want to go, but upgrading to Mojave (10.14) would get you around that error, and you’d still retain 32-bit app functionality.

Alternatively, EditReady is definitely worth the money if you don’t want to upgrade your OS just yet… but if you’re willing to try something a bit more fiddly, you should also have a look at ff•Works: https://www.ffworks.net

Another thought would be to put all of the images into a single Group, and apply the behaviors to the group. Then you could toggle each image in the group and export individually.
