  • Title with Scrolling Text (Motion) Does Not Scroll in FCPX

Posted by Bill Rabkin on October 29, 2019 at 9:07 pm

In Motion 5.4.4, I created a title containing one Text item. I applied the “Scroll Text” behavior to this item and entered prototype text for a credit roll to be used in FCPX.

In FCPX 10.4.7 I apply this title to my timeline as a connected clip. I play that portion of the timeline. The prototype text scrolls upward as expected.

With this title clip selected in the timeline, I change some of the text in Inspector — for example, replacing prototype placeholders with names of talent and crew. I play the timeline again, and now the text no longer scrolls. This credit roll has become static text, showing only a portion of the entire text.

Although I am using current versions of Motion and FCPX, this problem has existed for several past releases.

Any idea why this happens, and how to avoid or correct this?

    Thanks!

It must have something to do with the way you’ve set up your plugin.

To test, I just built what you described and it behaves properly. To start, I opened Motion and selected the Final Cut Title project option. Added the Scroll Text behavior to the text layer, and changed the text (content, font, outline, drop shadow just for kicks). Saved. Opened FCPX, applied the new Scrolling Text template over a generator background, replaced the text with several lines of gibberish, increased line spacing, alignment, other parameters…. still behaves properly.

Maybe crack that title open in Motion again and double-check everything.

I’m also running current Mojave / FCPX / Motion. Tested on a 2013 MacPro.

Thanks, Doug. I appreciate your going to the trouble.

I should have mentioned that this behavior is not consistent. Sometimes the vertical scroll works properly in FCPX after I’ve modified the text. Unfortunately, sometimes the text freezes. I have not been able to identify what causes it to work or to fail.

In my most recent project, after my credit scroll failed to move I dropped the same Title onto the timeline a few seconds after the failed one and modified the text in this one. It scrolled as expected, so I replace the failed one with the good one. After FCPX rendered the moved good one it continued to scroll as it should.

I’ll review all of the parameters in Motion, where the vertical scroll always works as I play the timeline.
