    I agree.

I have a simple PL for the schools.

    $25.00

    50- DVDs 1 manned camera
    100- ” 2 ”
    150- ” 3 ”

For multi-camera I use a director and switcher to reduce edit time.

  • It is so hard to do a fair test.

As a long time user of HVX and after looking at your footage I say that it wasn’t use correctly.

I don’t think that there no doubt that the EX-1 is brighter. There is even a test done by DV magazine that report that the EX-1 and the HVX are both rated at 320 ASA. I have tested it and I know that the EX-1 is brighter. Not 3 stops brighter as you said (1240 ASA) but brighter.

If we agree that one camera is brighter than the other when doing the other test sharpness and motion we should set each camera at their best best setting for that particular test.

In order to get the best resolution out of the HVX the exposure has to be from perfect to 1/3 f stop over expose. It is obvious that in your test the HVX is under exposed while the EX-1 is about 1/3 f stop over exposed in all the clips that I saw.

The EX-1 should be sharper than the HVX according to their specs., but I have other HDV cameras with higher specs than the HVX that don’t even close.

There are other features on the HVX that I don’t think that the EX-1 has. For example I can shoot at 18 fps like a super 8 and still get sound and not under cranking. I can also shoot 720p 24 @ 60 fps and get both over cranking regular motion and sound. I personally didn’t try on thee EX-1 but the Sony rep doing a presentation couldn’t do it.

The EX-1 a great little camera and I am sure that you could find great features. I like the sharp LCD, low light, comfortable grip adjustments, HD-SDI, etc. I don’t think it will replace the HVX as the camera of choice for INDIs but it is a good contender.

I personally own the Sony FX-1, Canon A1 and HV-20 as well as the HVX. They all have different uses.

May be the best way to compare cameras is to have owner of each cameras that know the camera inside out be the user. I would ask each one what the best features of each camera is and include those features in the comparison.

That won’t guarantee a perfect comparison, but at least one wouldn’t be favored.

It is even hard for me to test my own cameras because I have an emotional attachment to justify the expense of the latest camera I bought. 🙂

    Hi Lars,

Emre answer most of your questions, but I’ll tell you what I know about the M2.

My friend owns one. We shot a commercial with it and even with a truck of lights is was hard to use it without putting the gain up to 6 dbs. In real life it looses 2 f stops do to the lenses maximun aperture of f 2.8.

The edge to edge focus is very hard to achieve, and vignette is also a problem.

With the Letus you don’t have this problems, but you get a whole set of different problems. Using an f stop higher that f 5,6 will in most cases causes a noise pattern. I don’t know what causes it, but it is there. So that means that if you need to close the DOF to get more into focus you have to use another method but you can’t go past f 5,6 without paying the price.

The good news is that there is way around it. With the Letus on my HVX200 I can zoom from 18.8 mm to full 55 mm without loosing quality. That means that were I would need a 50 mm to get the shot I need, but need more DOP that I am getting at f 5,6 then I could use a 24 mm and zoom the camera from 20 mm (my standard zoom setting) to 40 mm and get the same angle. The extra DOP is achieved also because the 24 mm infinity is a little further than 5 feet.

Another no no with Letus is speeds higher that 1/120th of second. At higher speeds you stop down the vibrating GG so then you see the GG grain pattern.

I haven’t found a solution for that so far. It is not a big deal for me because in most cases I stay at 180′ (1/48th second)

That friend of mine that owns the M2, bought the Letus and to solve the Letus deficiencies also bought the SG and a new Letus attachment to convert the M2 and SG to a flip.

Earlier this year at NAB Redrock Micro was displaying a flip for the M2, but so far they haven’t release it. They are provably working on some new technology. I know that thet build nice equipment so they are provably waiting to have something perfect before they release it.

    I hope this helps.

September 25, 2007 at 3:41 am in reply to: 720pN – help please!

    There are other reasons.

If you are using a FW out to a laptop or Firestore FS-100
If you want to shoot 720p 24 or 30 at different frame rate and still record sound.

For example I like to record 720p 24 at 18 fps to get that old 8mm fill effect. If I use PN I would get fast motion without sound.

You can just dump it in a 23.98 timeline or use compressor. I guess that my question would be why would you want to edit 23.98? What are you trying to achieve?
It will still look the same way when you view it on TV 29.97

Since you already know how to use the Canons I’ll stay with Canon. I own the A1 and I think that it is the best HDV camera for the money.

My friend got a letter from the rebate people yesterday.

They told him that they are out of the 8 GB cards and they will send him the 16 GB as soon as they are out.

A 4 fps setting is not available unless you hack the camera. If your shooter did this then he provably knows more than you think. Instead of telling him what he did wrong ask him what effect he was trying to get.
