XDCAM is a format. It packages MPEG 2 or MPEG 4 files in a container called “.mxf.” Vegas can read these files natively, and has a unique proxy browser for XDCAM HD formats. It’s a standard of the ENG world. XDCAM EX records to SXS/Express cards, and XDCAM HD records to Professional Blu-ray discs.
XDCAM HD has either 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 color sampling, depending on which model you chose. Bitrates range from 35Mbps up, but XDCAM EX can shoot an HDV-compatible 25Mbps stream as well.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Force resample (usually not necessary) and use deinterlace settings.
Not the BEST deinterlacer, but it does a good job, especially when downconverting. We did this all the time/daily, until we bought EX1’s for training vids.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Both Ultimate S and Excalibur are Vegas 8 compatible, not sure how you meant it isn’t? If you mean 64bit, then yes…that’s a different story. Different app.
As Edward indicated, Vegas scripts can accomplish what you want.
Audio can be grouped/ungrouped at will; I’m assuming you perhaps want to do this for J/L cuts? If so, you can also use scripts for those actions too, making it much easier.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Simply drop the .veg file you want to nest on the timeline of the master instance of Vegas. .Veg files behave just like video files.

A-Go into Options | Preferences | Editing and change the default length of still images (5 seconds is the default).
B-Make a selection on the timeline to fit your desired length. Right Click and insert Generated Media, choose the titler from your choices. This will create a title equal to the length of the selected area
