What’s tragic, is that the NLE developer was allowed to say ABC was using their systems, and ABC was allowed to issue a press release saying “Daytime” was using their systems. The press release included quotes from a senior producer and a senior engineer.
No wonder people are afraid to speak out about what they’re using.
I’m aware of at least three major television groups using Vegas, but they will not allow a story to be published due to politics.
Sad that such a level of intimidation takes place in our industry.

I heard if you use 30 seconds or less of a copyrighted song you won’t get in trouble

Someone spoke to you incorrectly. Fair Use has some very clear lines on this, and at no point does commercial work fall into the discussion of length of use.
Google “My Voice, My Choice: Copyright Caveats” for a very clear, very specific explanation of this subject.

Now that copyright violation is civil AND criminal, it pays for videographers to have a clear idea of what they’re able to do and not do.
I have to laugh, over in one of the wedding video communities, there are people bitching about how “This guy stole my video and is passing it off as his work” and the stolen video contains stolen music, stolen by the originator of the work who is complaining someone stole his video. The irony is so thick you can smell it. 🙂

Also, some companies wouldn’t admit to using vegas to do something like a feature, since a lot of politics involved.

True story, names changed to protect the innocent.

Greg Morton, 28-year veteran of NBS as a Senior Editor and segment producer, had been using Vegas to cut together significant segments for “Daytime” the top-rated news show in its slot.
In an interview with me, Greg said that “He loves using Sony Vegas because of the time it saves him.” The station has a LOT of Newscutters (not even officially supported by Avid any longer).
In fact, while I was interviewing Greg, the Pope died and they had only minutes to cut together a montage different than what they had. They’d built content for the “dead pool” but it didn’t cover certain things…so we cut it in Vegas, sent it live to broadcast from the SDI port of the Vegas system. I have a photo of me at the ‘puter, Greg looking over my shoulder, and the clock showing it’s airtime. it was a big deal in the Vegas/major broadcast world at the time.

Well…his show/channel is owned by Friendly, a family network/corporation. They’re a major stockholder in Avid.

Within hours of my online story being published, a Senior VP at Avid was on the phone to a Senior VP at Friendly, who within seconds was on the phone to a Senior VP at NBS, who then sent it down the chain of command to the managing producer of Daytime.
Who then fired Greg Morton, just two years away from his retirement. Simply because he told people he liked Vegas and someone at Avid didn’t like that. The guy at Avid, BTW, also called me and demanded I change my story. “kiss my a** didn’t go far with him, but he was let go from Avid not too long after that.

“Politics” is a mild word for the cut-throat behavior some developers engage in.

it’s not labeled as “right” or “left.”
It’s dumbfully named “Near/far.”

Because without a 10ms fade out, you’d have truncated audio with pops all over the place. You WANT those fades. They’re very short. You can sometimes get away with 2ms fades, but not often.

Get rid of noise reduction. Set to “10” there isn’t a prayer it’s going to look good.
It’s VHS, it cannot be made to look great. The capture size, device, codec all play into this recipe.
Deinterlacing will only soften it further.
Brightness and contrast are rarely appropriate for video, and if your capture conversion is of much quality, you shouldn’t need to do anything to the video.

What are you using for capture/conversion? Codec?
Your MPEG settings sound just fine, given that the length of your project is unknown.

YouTube HD is heading to 1280 x 720, and ideally, that’s the best size at which to upload. This means that as videos are converted in the future, they’ll be at full rez.
There is a detailed tutorial on the VASST.com page about this very subject, including how to embed code to force the higher quality playback.
