XDCAM browser (now EOL and you’re supposed to use Content Browser) works fine for me.

Do you first go into Preferences and set the output folder? If you’re doing nothing it may be exporting back to the disc and you just get files compatible with the disc.

Set the output folder in Preferences and you’ll get the .MOVs from the XDCAM disc.

Although you describe essentially what I’m doing Ronny, something you said triggered an idea; “but it could be that you park your playhead on the wrong frame when you create your freeze frame”.

So, instead of grabbing the still from the last frame of the outgoing clip, I took a still frame from the first frame of the incoming clip. The incoming clip has the same KB effect on it but reversed.

Now I have silky smooth moves between five people with holds on each even though the moves change direction between the second and third person.

What confused me was that that moves and holds on the first two people were perfect but faulty from the third person forward. That was a stumper! But, I figured out what was going on.

I was taking the still (hold) frame from the wrong clip. I’m sorry to say Steve Martin, but the MacBreak Studio segment on “Making Ken Burns Obey” was in error on where to steal the hold frame. Your demo looked good but because your moves were so slow that the flaw wasn’t apparent. Please know I say this with deep respect for your knowledge and follow your videos closely.

What was going on was that grabbing and holding on the last frame of the outgoing clip was one frame short of completing the move. The first frame of the incoming clip would START with its first frame in the completed position, thus a small move between the hold clip and the next move in the direction established by the outgoing clip. If you were, say, going to the right in one KB clip, then the next KB clip would start with the frame that is the completion of the previous KB clip.

Clear as mud, I know, but try it and you’ll understand. What I’m trying to say is that the first frame of the next move was actually the completion of the previous move. That’s where I needed to grab the still frame for the hold sections. When I did the move completed in the correct direction and all my moves were smooth despite changing direction.

Man, I understand what I’m trying to say but its so hard to put it into words!

Andy, I’m sorry I didn’t recall your exploding text tutorials. I had MBS’s on my mind since it had come out that day.

But I’m glad to have the opportunity to say that you are brilliant. I have a ‘hidden’ page on my website where I park links to tutorials for quick access from one place and I put your two-part tutorial on Replicators there just this morning. (newsvideo.com/fcpx). If you look at it, its clearly not formatted for public view. Just my quick reference. If you look down the list you’ll see other tutorials from you. There’s one about using Rigs buried way down. I’m going to be revisiting that one soon.

I had viewed those Replicator tutorials before but watched them again early today because there are so many nuggets of good knowledge in there in support of the main theme. I am in awe of the techniques you know.

I have Premiere Pro by virtue of CS5 and now Creative Cloud and it’s only purpose in life for me is to quickly convert MTS files. I just drag them into the bin, select them all and paste them on a new timeline, set the output parameters for the format I wish and I get one long video (preferred, actually).

Hhhhmmm… I do this all the time without a problem. It seems that SOMETHING inside that CC has a drop zone that affects the underlying layer.

Try putting the CC into a CC.

I’ve also used the trick of putting any trash video clip at the bottom of the stack within the CC and taking its opacity all the way down so that whatever is acting in the video clip below it is now acting on an invisible clip.

Pardon me but I think the cause has been missed.

The text layers being used probably have a drop zone in them that ‘takes on’ whatever video lies below it. This characteristic drove me crazy at first until I discovered that.

If you start Motion and select the Text effect in the project browser you’ll see the window open with a text object alright, but also with the drop zone. Unless I need that drop zone (which I haven’t yet) then the first thing I do is delete it and then create my text effect.

I’ve taken stacked text objects that have no drop zone in them and put them into a compound clip and dissolved out of them often.

If an angle was not shot continuously then you’re going to have gaps. If you didn’t want the clips to sync then don’t include them in the multicam and just lay them over the multicam as you wish. If there are gaps in your MC you want out then edit the clip in a timeline normally and edit out the gaps but you’ll be editing out the same parts from the continuous clip.

It could be that you are really talking about the non-continuous clips ON TOP and its cutting back and forth against your will as you play the MC clip. Double-click on the MC clip to open it and then drag the thumb on the right side for the clip layer you want to be on top. In shorter words, rearrange the clips so that the continuous clip you want on top will be on top.

I stopped reading halfway through all the posts on this subject and thought I might just give some tips that will help. Pardon me if something I say here is a duplicate.

I found that if I put a marker at the beginning of the first clip of every angle the sync goes MUCH faster. You select ‘Sync on first marker’ but still leave the ‘Sync using sound’ checked. You put a marker at the first thing you can recognize as happening in all angles such as a clapper or a motion. Leaving the sound sync checked will allows FCPX to ballpark using the markers and then fine-tune using sound. You might find that the markers don’t exactly align in the multicam clip because the audio takes precedence for fine-tuning. I found the ‘first marker’ strategy works by just marking the first clip of many from the same camera. You don’t have to mark each clip. Amazing.

If you had a camera that start/stops all the way through you can avoid getting separate angle for every clip by group selecting the clips and giving them all the same camera name. Then use one of the drop downs to organize by camera name.
