Fill shape effect!
Posted by James Rose on July 24, 2013 at 3:04 pmHi,
I’m wondering if its possible to replicate the build effect on this website using Motion
https://www.percolatorapp.com/
Can I make a particle emitter fill a shape? I guess is the question.
Thanks,
James

July 24, 2013 at 4:50 pmYou would want to do that effect with a replicator.
Create a shape that you want to fill.
Create a circle and hit L to make a replicator for it.
Set the Replicator Shape to Image and the Arrangement to Random Fill (or Tile Fill if your prefer), adding your shape to the Image Source well.
You could animate the number of rows and columns to make the shape fill up dynamically.

July 24, 2013 at 5:25 pmYou can of course do the exact same thing with an Emitter – just follow the same set of instructions. Set the Speed to zero so the particles don’t go anywhere.

July 25, 2013 at 7:26 pmI also created a tutorial on this effect back in 2010. It’s using Motion 4, but the concept hasn’t changed.
Mark even uses a similar technique to the animation as mine.

July 25, 2013 at 8:01 pmAndy, I’m sorry I didn’t recall your exploding text tutorials. I had MBS’s on my mind since it had come out that day.
But I’m glad to have the opportunity to say that you are brilliant. I have a ‘hidden’ page on my website where I park links to tutorials for quick access from one place and I put your two-part tutorial on Replicators there just this morning. (newsvideo.com/fcpx). If you look at it, its clearly not formatted for public view. Just my quick reference. If you look down the list you’ll see other tutorials from you. There’s one about using Rigs buried way down. I’m going to be revisiting that one soon.
I had viewed those Replicator tutorials before but watched them again early today because there are so many nuggets of good knowledge in there in support of the main theme. I am in awe of the techniques you know.
Thank you very much for producing them.

Ha, no worries. It’s 3 years old after all. I’m glad Mark updated it for Motion 5. I noticed his tutorial today as well on my twitter feed.
Mine’s a lot longer, mostly because I can’t seem to shut up when I do these tutorials. Regardless, I’m glad you enjoy them and the Replicator one. Lot of cool tricks in that one even though it’s another long one.
One of these days though, I’m going to master the under 8 minute tutorial. But as Aragorn said, “It is not THIS day.”

July 25, 2013 at 9:05 pmAndy, if your long tutorials had a lot of fill in them then I would agree on trying to make them shorter. But there’s no fill. Every few seconds seems to be filled with another tip on the road to the objective of the tutorial. I enjoy every minute of them. Just want to let you know.
