T. Payton – Thank you for that. I thought it was me. My first reaction is to say “Well, then I have an MX02 LE with MAX for sale!” but I’ll wait until the rumored major update to FCPX is issued to see if anything changes. If not, then I’m putting it on eBay.

I’m sitting here with a Decklink card in my 2009 Mac Pro editing on FCPX and using the card to send to a big output monitor in the room and it performs quite well. I did have to go into the Preferences and cycle through all the output settings to see which performed the best and it was strange to see that a couple of settings that seemed that should work were not suitable. For me, the ‘Set default video standard as:’ is set to HD 1080i 59.94. That setting shows smooth playing and scrubbing from the FCPX timeline. Your mileage may vary depending on the monitor you’re feeding. Or not. It’s all voodoo.

Jeff. Brilliant idea! I mean, I was about to suggest that the OP simply break the CC apart to get his timeline back but your two-step with the CC is genius. I haven’t tested it yet but it seems that I could easily save versions of my edit by selecting all, making a CC with a backup name, then breaking the CC on my timeline apart and continue editing knowing that the current version is safely tucked away in my Event Browser. If it works the way I think it does you’ve just changed my workflow.

To expand on Jeff’s advice: Once you go to File > Share you’ll see on the left the output options you would see if you clicked the Share button on the far right of the bar in the center of your screen. Drag what you want to be listed in that Share button to the left. I think what you want is “Save Current Frame”. It’s those options on the left that appear as Share options from the Share button. Once there, click on the Share button (again, far right of the bar in the center of the screen and choose Save Current Frame. You’ll get the drop down sheet to choose where to save the frame.

Haven’t had this problem in the latest release of FCP X but the way I used to cure that problem was to go to Preferences and change the timecode display to Frames. Back in the timeline go to the suspect frame and identify the suspect clip.
I then selected the clip, Shift-F to match itself in the Even Browser, then just dragged back down to replace itself in the timeline. Worked every time for me.
I suspect that I’m just forcing a new render file for the duration of that clip and that simply deleting all render files would do the same thing but I chose this way so I wouldn’t have to wait for the whole project to re-render. But, you could do either.

“gets confused” calls for a better explanation.
Duplicating an Event in the Finder means you’ll also be duplicating the internal ID of the Event and X will see the two Events as the same one. Not good. Metadata depends on which Event is clearly identified.
This is why you MUST duplicate within X. When you duplicate within X a new internal ID is generated and X will know how to manage those two events. Yes, you can duplicate in the Finder if you know that, once duplicated, the two Events with identical internal ID’s can’t both be seen by X at the same time.
To be safe, always duplicate within FCP X.

Two things. Open the Red footage in its own timeline from the Event Library. That will create a timeline the same size as the footage. Maybe you can go to Compressor from there.
Also, and this is a shot in the dark, lay the footage in your timeline and highlight it, then go to the Retime icon and select Conform Speed and see what happens. Just throwing that out there. Haven’t tried it myself.

I had to read your post twice to understand what you are saying. It appears that you have a background video layer and another clip above it and you want to put a wipe on the clip above to make it appear over the background clip below.
If this is the case it sounds like you’re using an effect with a Dropzone layer and that Dropzone layer will affect all video below. Right-click on that effect to Open in Motion, delete the Dropzone and save under another name.
Or, try putting the upper layer in a Compound Clip. Then open the Compound Clip on its own timeline and put the effect on the clip there. Sometimes the Compound Clip will isolate the effect.

It sounds like you got the bare MXF files and not the full folder structure created by the camera. Get the whole folder structure and FCPX will import the media in a heartbeat. No folder structure, no import.
I have Adobe Creative Cloud so I have access to Premiere (blechhh!). I use Premiere to import all the MXF files, select them all, paste into a timeline and export as a long single movie in Prores. Or, break them up if you want.
There are other programs that will convert for a price.
As a side note, before Premier Pro fans start cheering how PP can do this and FCPX can’t, please remember that even PP owners don’t want the bare files. The folder structure will ‘reassemble’ shots that go over the file limit of the FAT 32 file format used by the cameras. The folder structure adds very little file size. It’s only the ignorant who think they don’t want that folder structure.
But, for some reason, I can’t get people to listen to me. I still get them ‘helping’ me by just giving me the bare MXF files.
A friend who uses PP called Adobe with the problem that PP sometimes goes into a rendering loop that never ends. Adobe said that that is sometimes caused by using MXF and MTS files without the folder structure. He was advised by Adobe to always use the entire folder structure.
