Are you asking about editing .mp4 files natively in FCP? You can purchase a plug-in from Calibrated Software that will allow you to do this so you don’t have to convert the files to .mov using Sony’s transfer Tool.

This is why it’s beneficial to provide as much info as possible about your workflow. Since you’re using a card reader to transfer footage I’m going to assume that for some reason it’s not playing nice with your Mac Pro anymore. I don’t know why it’s not, but I suspect a software issue. To prove the theory connect the camera via USB and transfer your footage that way instead of using the card reader.
The fact that the card reader works OK with the other computer suggests a software conflict/corruption with yours.
Are there any differences with the 2 computers’ operating systems? Is one using an earlier version of Mac OS that the other?

I also am running the latest Mac OS and:
- FC Studio 3
- XDCAM Transfer
- Sony Clip Browser
on a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro tower with no issues. Yet.

Can you think of any settings you changed in either the Log and Transfer plug-in or with FCP7 itself? If not then my first suggestion would be to trash the preference files for both programs. This will in effect restore the programs to their default settings. If you don’t know how to trash preferences files for the Log and Transfer Plug-in here is the path:
Macintosh HD>Users>”yourname”>Library>Preferences>Log and Transfer.plist (or a name similar to that. The suffix should end in .plist). Drag that file to the trash and restart the Log and Transfer program. I don’t use Sony’s Log and Transfer plug-in but trashing preferences with any program is the way I’ve described it.
For trashing FCP preference files there’s a free program you can download that will do the job for you. There are several preference files and using a program designed for this purpose is the right way to go. It’s called preference manager and you can find it here:

Look at the connection closely on both the cable and the camera. You’d be smart to use some sort of magnifying aid. Make sure the contacts are all there and that they’re not bent. If they look good on both the cable and camera then it’s an internal issue and you’ll have to send it in to Sony.

I would suspect AJA is working on a smaller version of the Ki Pro to compete with the Nano. Folks are buying the current Ki Pro for use in studio settings and the Nano for field work.

I don’t have my GL2 or the manual available at the moment (lent it out) but there’s a thumb wheel on the back of the camera so you can change shooting modes. Change it to “manual” mode and the hot shoe for the MA300 should activate.

Check your owner’s manual for DVCAM (SD) recording and transfer. I don’t have a manual for the EX1R and I can’t find one online. However, the EX1R brochure talks about DVCAM mode as using the “conventional” way of transferring footage to computer. That suggests to me that you may have to hook your camera up via firewire in order to transfer the standard def. footage.

That’s because you’re missing the XDCAM EX codecs. They reside with the NLE (which you say you’re waiting for) and not with XDCAM Transfer.
You can, however, view your clips with Sony’s Clip Browser software. To summarize:
XDCAM Transfer – needs XDCAM EX codecs to work, which are found in programs like Final Cut Pro.
Sony FAM driver – software that recognize SxS Pro memory cards as an attached device.
Sony Clip Browser – Basically is a copy tool but is also an XDCAM EX stand-alone viewer.– Don

Okay, no it isn’t, really.
Arthur, is there any use in trying to convince you to shoot regular colour footage (clean) and then doing your black and white effects in post? Because that’s they way I’d do it. That way you’d be able to re-purpose your work in colour at a later time if so inclined.
