It’s certainly not the only way available but it’s the most portable and least expensive way. An alternative would be the AJA Ki Pro but that looks to be more for a studio setting. It’s records HD-SDI/HDMI, etc. to hard drive. And it only records Apple Pro Res.

The add on flash memory unit costs $800.00 and change. That’s getting up close to a grand. I talked about this camera during our local assoc. meeting on Wed. Sony’s claiming 11 hours recording time on that FMU, which has got to be worth something for someone who wants to step up from HDV and into solid state recording. And for the same entry price as the Z5U. $4995.00.

First of all, make sure you don’t have any other FW devices connected when your camera is. Canons don’t usually like to share with others.
To start, connect your (turned off) camera via FW then turn it on, then start FCP. Choose Easy Setups and find the HDV 1080 25F preset. Make sure it says “VTR OK” in the log and transfer window then you’re set.

Rob,
Try posting this in the PPro forum and you might get a faster resolution to your query. But by all means check back here too, because there are some folks in the UK that use PPro and drop in here on a regular basis.

It would be nice if you could have posted an example of your noisy footage in the form of a frame grab (picture) but since you didn’t there are a couple of suggestions I can offer:
1) Turn off picture profiles if one is active
2) Use the “RESET ALL” function in the camera’s menu to return everything to the default settings.
3) Make sure you’re in manual everything so that the auto-gain is not active.The EX cameras have a very decent picture to noise ratio, otherwise they wouldn’t be using them in full length feature films such as “Public Enemies”. If you’re experiencing excessive picture noise take it to an authorized Sony repair facility so they can check it out on their calibration intruments.

You might want to contact Philip Bloom in the UK. He has extensive experience using the Letus and the EX1/EX3 cameras. I’m pretty sure he’s done some of his shooting without the benefit of any other monitor other than the flip-out LCD screen.

I’m not the one to ask about that because if I need more light I use a lighting kit or an on-camera light. But I suspect that other than shooting interlaced or cranking up the picture gain there isn’t much else you can do. The EX picture profiles are there to change the contrast, colours and colour balance but don’t have much effect on the low light sensitivity.
Alister Chapman from the UK drops in here from time to time and I believe is experimenting with picture profiles. I think he is working on one for night shooting but hasn’t published it yet. But you want an answer today and I don’t have one for you.

Use everything at your disposal, including some shots on a tripod, indoors and outdoors. I’ve learned to shoot way more stuff than you’ll think you’ll need because at the end of the day (project) you’ll use have used it all. You can even use your EX handheld and get some very steady shots if you hold it right.
Twist the handgrip to taste, put your left hand palm up underneath the camera tripod plate and jam your right eye hard into the VF rubber cup. These 3 points anchor the camera to you and makes for a very stable shooting platform for short periods. Now use your left eye to look at the flip-out LCD screen while the fingers of your left hand are free to adjust the focus and iris rings.If you want to rent a glide cam don’t go too light. I’ve found that something like a Glide Cam 4000 series is just about perfect for the EX1 or EX3 cameras.

Not Really. Your 27 min. clip has been chopped into 4 Gbyte pieces because the solid state recording
cards are formatted in FAT 32 binary, which is the format that can be read by both Mac and Windows machines. FAT 32 can only record files that are a maximum of 4Gbytes in size.[anthony Faulkner] “will it effect anything?”
No. Both the Clip Browser, Sony Transfer Tool and the Sony Log and Transfer Tool know how to combine the pieces into one clip again.
