Go to the User Preferences in the FCP menu and check to see if “List Recent Clips” is still set up the way you had it previously. If not then change the number of recent clips to what you want and then try again.
If that doesn’t work you might try trashing FCP’s preference files and restarting the program.

Since you’ve offered absolutely no information about your hardware/software setup it will be very difficult to trouble shoot your issue(s). It’s like asking someone to figure out why your car won’t start but they’re not allowed to see it.
Since you state that FCP was working fine before and now it isn’t (and you haven’t changed anything) the only thing I can suggest is to trash FCP’s preference files. Sometimes they can become corrupted and cause FCP to act strangely. If you haven’t done this before you can download a free program that will do it for you. You can find it here:

You’re trying to use Sony’s Clip Browser to export EX clips into Final Cut Pro. That’s not What Clip Browser was designed for. You need to be using XDCAM Transfer Tool. If you don’t have it you can get it here:

You state that you’ve just upgraded Clip Browser to v.2.6 but that you’re on a Power Mac. Clip Browser only works with Intel Macs, so what kind of Mac do you really have?

No, but to protect your earlier FCP project file do a “Save as” and save your project under a modified name. The database the software upgrade statement is referring to is the metadata that the program gathers about each XDCAM EX clip. Upgrading to the latest version will modify the database so it can be read by the newer version. If you wish you can make a backup copy of the old XDCAM Transfer database beforehand and then do the upgrade. If you still have all the original BPAV folders then all you have to do to recover your older database is to import all the BPAV folders again using the previous version of XDCAM Transfer. That’s if you decide not to manually backup your older database first before upgrading.

No, not at all. The newer version works the same as the older version. Once the clips are imported into FCP, XDCAM Transfer’s ability to affect FCP is over.

No. Your camera essentially has 2 audio channels. It’s up to you how you utilize them. You can:
- Use them both as one stereo source using either a stereo mic plugged into both channels or:
- Two mono mics plugged into ch.1 and 2 or:
- One mono mic and set up the EX audio to record that one mono signal to both channels.

Have you tried the same setup with cameras other than EX cameras? if so are the levels constant or do they react the same as the EX cameras? Quite possibly the volume of that 1Khz tone is being changed or you’re using more mic feeds on some days than others. But normally if you’re using the same camera and mixer all the time and no one is playing with the levels in between sessions everything should remain the same.

Hello Thomas,
Recently I was also of the opinion that the Tiffen T1 IR filter was also a necessity when shooting with either the new PMW-EX1R or the PMW-350(K) models. This is not the case. Sony has apparently been successful in dramatically reducing the IR contamination in their new EX cameras without affecting the widened colour gamut in the red spectrum which was so ground breaking when the EX cameras first appeared in the fall of 2007.
In the comparison pictures in the first article below you’ll notice that the Sachtler bag IR contamination is 95% gone in the EX1R shot and all gone in the 350K shot. And no T1 filter was used.
The Tiffen T1 IR filter cost is about $140.00 USD so I guess you could get one and see if the difference is worth it. But honestly? If I had an new EX1R I wouldn’t worry about it.

Sure, but you can’t keep the clip un-wrapped and export back to the camera’s SxS Pro card. You can use Sony’s Clip Browser to re-wrap the clip back to .mp4 and then export the clip. Clip Browser will create a new BPAV folder and record it back to the camera.
