It won’t be useless. If you’ve kept your working project file on a drive other than your media drive it will be intact and have all your editing work up to date. After your corrupted media drive is fixed just add back your video and other files into a new capture scratch folder. When you open your project file follow FCP’s prompts to reconnect all your video clips, etc. and you’ll be back in business.

I don’t have any experience with writing back to the U1 drive but I can confirm that I personally don’t have any issues with FCP7, OS 10.6.2 or any of the latest versions of Sony’s various XDCAM software programs.
Running the latest of everything on a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro.

By default FCP will flag any standard def. sequence as interlaced and anything you drop into a standard def. sequence as interlaced as well. Make sure your downconverted progressive stuff is actually flagged as progressive and your sequence is also flagged progressive before you drop anything into the sequence.
As mentioned, don’t downconvert to DV NTSC which is not the best. Use either DVCPRO 50 or ProRes DV NTSC. The results will look much better than straight DV. Since I sometimes do multicam shoots with a mixture of XDCAM EX and standard def cameras my workflow is to downconvert the EX stuff to ProRes and transcode the SD stuff to ProRes using Compressor exclusively before I drop everything into the FCP sequence for multicam editing. The final result for DVD looks good. I also make sure frame controls are turned on in Compressor when downconverting the EX stuff, the same as you.

Good luck on your shoot, Adam. I was reasonably sure that Sony would attend to your camera issues fairly quickly, as they certainly don’t want any bad press about the NX CAM line at this stage of the game.

Follow Alister’s advice and also be advised that, on the Mac side of things XDCAM Transfer doesn’t generate MXF files for XDCAM EX cameras. XDCMA EX files are in .mp4 format. XDCAM Transfer transcodes the hi rez .mp4 files into a quicktime wrapper for Final Cut Pro. Once you choose to import the files from the memory cards the Transfer tool will import and transcode in one step, depositing the clips into a folder of your choosing. This workflow is if you use XDCAM Transfer as a stand alone app. If you use the program within FCP your clips will appear in the Browser window when complete.

Any clip that is labeled “incomplete” even when all the clips from the memory card are listed usually means that your clip spans more than one card. You have to have all the clips from both cards listed in XDCAM Transfer Tool before the program can splice the pieces back together. Once the program sees all the pieces the transfer will be seamless. Just highlight the piece that has .smi at the end and the whole clip will be transferred.

The Firewire port only transfers EX codecs that are essentially the same as HDV. As far as I know, the SD AVI files are also available for transfer via firewire.
Any EX1R shooting format that starts with SP is pretty much HDV.

Rick did an extensive test on an NX5 a month or so ago and didn’t mention any issues like the ones you’re having. Off the top of my head he’s probably the one with the most experience with this camera.
If I had this camera and was having the problems you’re describing, and they were consistent, I’d take the camera back right away and ask for another one if they couldn’t rectify the problem immediately. Right now your NX5 isn’t reliable enough to use it on a paying gig.
