“At the time of writing (January 2010), Sony Professional recommends only the latest Class10 SDHC cards. Using 8-, 16-, or 32-GB media, approximately 35, 70, or 140 minutes of recording (in SP mode) can be achieved.
Please note, it is not recommended to utilise the Slow Motion recording function due to speed limitations of SD Card media. The nature of the adaptor and SD Card media will also mean slightly less reliability than SxS media – caution should be exercised when turning off XDCAM EX hardware during recording. XDCAM EX hardware will need a firmware upgrade to use MEAD-SD01 – please see specifications for more information.”

I can’t address your problem because I don’t use SDHC cards but you may want to check out the link below and perhaps do your own firmware upgrade to see if this resolves the Hoodman issue.

For me it was never an intermittent thing because I upgraded from OS 10.4.11 right to Snow Leopard, bypassing Leopard completely. I wanted to upgrade to FCP7 which only runs on 10.5.8 or higher. Since I couldn’t buy Leopard anymore I went right to the snowy variety. Once I installed everything it all worked seamlessly right out of the gate, as it were.

The following are just guesses:
Make sure that the sequence settings match your 1080p 25 fps footage. If you’re actually editing in an interlaced sequence you’ll get the artifacts you’re describing.
Does the playback look somewhat blurry as well as showing artifacts but becomes sharp when you stop playback? If it is then your RT settings are set to ‘Dynamic’ and FCP is lowering the quality during playback instead of dropping frames. This will also look like horizontal flicker. This may happen if your FW drive is not up to the demands of FCP’s playback requirements.

Agreed. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Jay, unless there’s some awesome feature in OS 10.6 that you absolutely must have then stay with 10.5.8. Right now, everything made by Apple and most other software folks will run on the earlier OS.
But for the record, I’m running OS 10.6.2 and FCS 3 and the Sony apps including XDCAM Transfer are all working just fine on a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro.

Possibly you haven’t been keeping up with some regular system maintenance. Over time your Macintosh HD directory will become corrupted. The directory keeps a list of where everything is on your hard drive. There are lots of programs (some of which are free or shareware) that will perform system maintenance and return your startup drive to it’s original efficiency.
One of the best ones is called DiskWarrior®

If memory serves the Canon DSLRs that shoot video are all using the H.264 codec. This codec is actually a delivery codec and not for editing. I recommend that you convert your footage to ProRes. If you shot progressive (I think that’s what the Canons shoot, yes?) then transcode to ProRes 1080p 24fps and then drop everything into a sequence with the same settings.

There may be plenty of space but the disc formatting may be incompatible with your computer. If you’re on a windows machine make sure your Passport is formatted in NTFS; if you have a Mac then the formatting should be Mac OS Extended. Don’t assume a new hard drive is already formatted with something you can use immediately. Always reformat a new drive before use.

In the camera menu: hit menu button>audio input>trim CH-1;CH-2
>audio input>monitor CH>select
Remember, you have to be in manual mode on each input channel for the menu controls to be active.
You also cannot trim the internal mic(s) L&R, only mics connected externally (at least on the EX1R).– Don

In either the viewer or canvas windows go up to the top and you’ll see 3 drop down menus in the middle. Choose the one on the right and make sure RGB is checked. There’s a KB shortcut that sometimes gets activated unknowingly that changes the RGB setting to Alpha.
