Steven, you’re going the wrong way. -11dBu is the quietest setting. the larger the number numerically the more trim you’re dialing in. The EX series cameras come with a default trim setting of -41 dBu.

If I’m shooting exclusively for the web I use 1080p 30 or 720p 30, but mostly 1080p. I shoot for other video companies based in other cities (and countries) and they ask for progressive anyway, no matter what the final product is. As Gary Adcock likes to say: “Interlaced is a delivery codec, not an acquisition codec.”

Using Sony’s Clip Browser software (free download) you can take an orphaned or ‘stand alone’ .mp4 file from an XDCAM EX and create a new BPAV folder for that file,

“Point the (Clip Browser) top Explorer window to a location (‘Desktop,’ for example), select File–>Import, browse to the .mp4 and try to import it. If this works it will create a new BPAV folder containing the rebuilt clip in the specified location.”

The high end programming is probably using ‘Automated or Automatic’ dialogue replacement, or ADR as it’s commonly known. Also the quality of the original aircraft audio would depend on the aircraft i.e. a 747 as opposed to a Cessna 152. Certainly a super cardioid mic would be helpful for rejecting side audio but I’m only guessing now.

I still maintain that hard drive storage is less expensive than solid state storage and a whole lot faster to transfer data, especially if your hard drive is FW800 and a USB stick is well, just that. Like Clint said, multiple hard drive backups are a good solution and can be done in a fraction of the time it takes to transfer to a memory stick. The other day I transfered 27 plus Gbyes to a Sony memory stick and it took over an hour.

I’ve got one of those new 32G Sony USB sticks and up here in the G.W.N. they cost me just over a hundred bucks CAD. So I don’t know, I think hard drives are still more cost effective for archiving. At least for me.
Well, I used to have a Sony USB stick. I FedEx’d it to a client in L.A. today. Hopefully they’ll mail it back.
