Mic Pre-amp
Posted by Steven Gladstone on February 15, 2011 at 1:34 pmI’m trying to use my hardwired Tram 50 with my EX-1, however the level comes in very low. This is with the battery in the tram, and with the +48 phantom power. The mic works fine with my old DVX-100, and I’ve had an audio check it on a mixer.
So is there a way to increase the mic pre-amp above -11udb (that seems to be as high as I can set it in the menu.)?
Thanks

Steven, you’re going the wrong way. -11dBu is the quietest setting. the larger the number numerically the more trim you’re dialing in. The EX series cameras come with a default trim setting of -41 dBu.

February 15, 2011 at 9:15 pmYou would think I would have just naturally checked that.
I feel so silly.
Thanks.
oddly enough though, the manual says it goes to -8udb, but I’m not seeing that, just -11udb.
Firmware 1.20 and now 1.25

Yeah I just checked mine and it reads the same: only goes to -11 dBU

I just know there is some kind of “Spinal Tap” joke here. Maybe the Sony engineers actually do have a sense of humor.

Sony? Humor? Same sentence? I’m a frayed knot.

February 19, 2011 at 2:34 amThis was a timely post for me. I just used a Tram on my EX1R (with +48v phantom supplied by the camera), and even with fairly high (low) trim, the audio has a slightly noisy floor. Acceptable, but not perfect. I didn’t test using the little battery in the Tram’s own pre-amp barrel.
I recommend, and when possible will probably use, line level on the camera and in line with the Tram, a Sound Devices pre-amp (MM-1). It is CLEAN. The difference is remarkable.
Did the correct trim setting in the camera fix your problem? If so, what trim setting did you ultimately find solved it?

Just a reminder that anytime you use the line setting on the EX1, EX1R or EX3 you won’t be able to adjust the trim level in the camera’s menu. Sony assumes you’ll be adjusting the trim using an outside source.
