If you push the STATUS button below the handle on the camera body you can cycle through the various screens (using the joystick). The audio screen shows all the increments on the scale.

Check out the link above. They have experience with the SxS format and I think there may be a free trial period for their retrieval software. If not you can send your card to them and they’ll try to get the footage off. They are not cheap. The program you’re looking for is called Treasured.

Just to clarify one point of Greg’s good advice, keep the focus ring engaged for auto-focus (forward) but slide the focus switch to manual mode. Now you’ll be able to use manual focus but when you want to push the auto-focus button Greg describes it will work. If the focus ring is pulled back to manual mode none of the focus buttons will make a difference. I think that’s what Greg meant but I didn’t want there to be any ambiguity.
I like my EX1R for this very reason. It’s got an auto focus button right on the hand grip. Pro lenses with an auto focus feature will generally have this same hand grip button just in front of the zoom rocker.

Back in December 2007 Craig and I were the early adopters of the EX1 and we had to learn not only the camera but the initial workflow practices and then report on our findings to this forum. I believe that not too long ago one learned about A/V gear not so much by reading operation manuals but by the older guy or gal that had been at the production facility a lot longer that you. Information was handed down from the old to the new during the apprenticeship process. I think Sony’s way of instruction is still stuck in those times.

Just check in your area for a post house that does this sort of thing. It’s really more time consuming than anything else, as you’ve probably discovered by now. Since the skill level to do this isn’t very advanced you could post your request on your local film school’s job board. I’m sure there would be someone there willing to do the job at a much lower rate than a post house. Give them access to your tapes, DV deck and a computer and let them go at it.
There’s no reason to archive to a different recording format because all you’ll be left with are files that take up more hard drive space with absolutely no improvement in quality. keep in mind that your DV tapes are already digital so the quality will be constant during a transfer. Only when you start manipulating your DV footage (colour correction and/or other filters) should you be concerned with a drop in quality. Mini DV footage requires about 1 Gbyte of storage for every 5 minutes of tape. Any other codec better than DV will have a corresponding increase in storage space.

The EX1R does but the EX1 and the EX3 do not record SD.

Just a reminder that anytime you use the line setting on the EX1, EX1R or EX3 you won’t be able to adjust the trim level in the camera’s menu. Sony assumes you’ll be adjusting the trim using an outside source.
