All you can do is try, Darren. I’m not saying that your dropped frames problem is exclusively to do with your LaCie drive because I’m not there looking over your shoulder to see what’s really going on. But what I do know is what has worked for myself and others in the past in this situation, and that using the mixdown command or importing a self-conatined movie into a new sequence usually solves the immediate problem. Sorta like a workaround that gets the job done.

Because you’re using a FW drive and it probably isn’t capable of playing back all your video and audio files simultaineously without dropping frames. Don’t forget that Apple doesn’t condone the use of FW drives with FCP for this very reason.
If the audio mixdown doesn’t do the job for you you have another option that will: if you want to print to tape but you’re dropping frames, then export a self-conatined quicktime movie out of FCP. Once that’s done import that movie into FCP in a new sequence. Hit record on your deck and hit play on the computer. That should do it.

Do a mixdown of your audio tracks and then try it again. You’ll find the command in the sequence>render only>mixdown menu. This will create an invisible file of all your audio, like a ‘consolidate’ command. If you change anything after the command the file will be deleted and you’ll have to use the mixdown command again.

Even though you said you were pretty sure the footage was recorded at normal 29.97 all I can suggest is that you try the two 24p ways. Obviously the 29.97 capture preset isn’t working for you. If one of them transfers from tape to computer without issue then you’ve found the actual framerate of your footage, whether it be 24p or 24pA. If your footage was indeed captured at one of the 24p settings it won’t matter what you’re using for a deck because 24fps footage is recorded with imbedded flags that tell FCP to remove pulldown on the fly during transfer. FCP will also put back the pulldown on the fly when you print back to tape.

Is this firewire drive a new one? If so, make sure it’s formatted in MacOS Extended (Journaling off).

Sorry…….I meant Alpha setting, not Gamma setting. There’s 3 pulldown menus at the top of the window. Go to the one furthest to the right.

Go to the top ov your canvas window where you’ll find a small pull down menu. Choose the RGB setting instead of the gamma setting.

Thanks. Wasn’t aware of that. I just noticed in the toolbar at the top of the Disk Utiliy window is the option to click on “Turn Journaling On” and “Turn Journaling Off”.
