I too, was under this same impression because of what other professionals have been saying about their HDV shooting experiences. Perhaps the Canon fairs better because of the 9 frame GOP instead of Sony’s 15 (so I’ve been told).

I noticed your post in the Canon forum and was wanting to help but I don’t know squat about the H1. Just curious to know if you found a solution and were able to capture OK (Is this known as thread jacking?) :0

Just to add to Shane’s comment: Your G-Raid mini also has a power adapter and since the owner’s manual states that you may need to augment the FW (power) connection with some computers I’d suggest trying the power adapter if you’re having problems keeping the mini powered on with only the FW connection. If you’ve got something plugged into the other FW port at the same time there might not be enough left for the mini. Just a thought.
FWIW I use the mini with a 17″ Macbook Pro and don’t need to use the power adapter. Works fine for me.

If I were you I’d be phoning AMEX right now to see what your options are about getting your money back. They may tell you “Buyer Beware” and send you on your way but It doesn’t hurt to ask. Can you start a new project by just starting from the program icon? If so then choose a new scratch disc location and quit FCP. Rename your current project’s scratch disc folder something else just so FCP will not be able to find it during startup. Restart FCP by using the program icon, not your project icon. When FCP starts, open your project. When aksed, reconnect your media by following the on screen instructions. Depending on how FCP reacts to each media file when connected you may have to recapture one or more media files. There also may be a corrupted render file that’s stopping the launch process. In that case, instead of trying to find the offending file it’s usually much easier to just trash ALL your render files and let FCP re-render everyhing.

A layered Photoshop file will import as a sequence to allow manipulation of the individual layers with filters or any other FCP special effect, just like a video sequence. This is especially good for graphics where you don’t want some parts of the graphic to be visible right away, but perhaps appear or fade in over time. If you don’t want your image to be imported as a sequence I believe you can flatten the image first in Photoshop before you import it.

You gave me enough to form a recommendation. None of the standard def Canons work particularly well in very low light situations. Don’t get me wrong here: if you’re shooting inside on a cloudy day and there’s not a lot of interior lighting and small windows you’d probably get the shot but you’d be at the limit of the GL2 without adding picture gain. I’m thinking church here. At least this has been my experience with my GL2. Your mileage will obviously differ depending on the amount of interior light you’re getting. You need to try one out first before making a decision. With proper lighting the GL2’s picture is clear and crisp.
The XL2 is better in low light than the GL2 by at least 1 stop and even with +3 or +6 of picture gain added, the picture is still acceptable. This has also been my experience. The XL2’s picture is superior to the GL2 if they both have good lighting to work with.
If low light shooting is a major part of your camera needs and you can’t afford to buy a light kit or would even have the time to set one up then have a good look at the Sony DSR-PD170, the undisputed king of low light shooting.
Summary: The GL2 is small and has a great picture if you have enough light. The XL2 needs less light to get a good picture but is larger, heavier and more expensive than the GL2. The XL2 is the only one of the 3 cameras that shoots native widescreen. The Sony works great in low light but only has a 13X zoom, a mono on-camera mic and the picture quality (in my opinion) falls just slightly below the GL2 as long as the GL2 has enough light.
Hope this hasn’t made your buying decision even more confusing but has perhaps helped a bit.
