Probably not, but something like a Hoodman, depending on how it’s made will enable the user to flip out the LCD and quickly slide it on and then off again before stowing the screen. If that works out you won’t need an additional monitor. The stock LCD works very well.

Let’s see….I’m starting to get inquiries from wedding folk about HD. Not a lot of them but certainly more than a year ago. So, I’ll be buying a good internal Blu-ray burner soon with the hopes that Apple comes out with better (as opposed to the now non-existent) support for Blu-ray authoring with the next DVD Studio Pro upgrade. Heck, Apple needs to show better support for HD DVD for that matter. Otherwise I’ll be forced to buy Adobe Encore.
But I’m buying into Blu-ray mostly because of our projected corporate work. Folks who shoot mainly for the web will be able to stay with SD for a lot longer, and that part of the industry is growing big time.
I think Blu-ray will eventually be the winner in this war (ducking quickly) no matter what giants like Wal-Mart say to the contrary.
How was that, Thax? If my topic isn’t good enough to generate some response then somebody else can start something better. It’s all I could come up with on such short notice.

The supplier wants a grand for each 16 Gbyte card here in the GWN (great white north) even though the CDN and US dollar is the same value. I already have 2 of the U60’s but my W/A adapter is still on backorder, and I ordered that at the same time as the camera and extra batteries.

The LCD seems fine outdoors, but where I am it’s the dead of winter and cloudy all the time, so the true test will be when the sun’s out. The VF is not good enough for critical focus but with peaking turned on and if you’ve got a wide shot set up with a deep DOF you can be reasonably confident that your shot will be in focus using only the VF.
Actually, I did a few tests trying to focus on an object with a shallow DOF using only the viewfinder and the subject was in focus after checking later at home. But using peaking in this situation, as well as using the expanded focus feature is a must if you want to be sure.

I’m pretty sure you can get a third party .avi codec plugin for Quicktime Player. Check it out at the Apple web site. With the proper .avi codec installed you should be able to view the .avi movie and then export it to any QT codec you want. There is also a limited .avi Quicktime component already available in QT Pro. Make sure it’s active by going to Quicktime Preferences and clicking on the advanced tab then clicking on the MIME Settings button. There you can activate the .avi codec in the “Video only and video with audio file formats” tab.

You can also use the joystick on top to do the exact same thing with regard to changing things on-screen. I find it far easier to use the joystick than that infernal roller at the back.

Good stuff, Craig. Nice DOF footage and then there’s that wonderful slo-mo. I haven’t done that yet. Soon. I was a little disappointed that there was no Craig playing on the carousel while someone else pushed the record button.
I’m also in the middle of doing something similar for our local videographers’ association meeting at the end of the month. My stuff will be scenery shots done at a local government park and will include as many consenting wild animals and (wild) meandering hikers as I can get in the frame.

I’m using a dual core 3 Ghz Mac Pro 8 Gigs RAM, X1900XT grfx card. XDCAM native .mov files will play just fine at full frame 1920×1080 using Quicktime as a stand alone app. FYI the fact that I’ve got 3 750gig internal media drives configured as RAID 0 might also have something to do with full frame playback. I’m also watching playback on an Apple 30″ Cinema display, which is even harder on the grfx card.

Has anything changed with your setup since the last time you used FCP successfully? Have you added any third party plugins to FCP? There has to be a point where FCP was working for you and then not working. What’s happened in between to change things? If iDVD is also affected it may be a Quicktime thing. Anything changed with your QT version?
This type of trouble shooting help is really tough without further information, so post back with anything you can think of. Otherwise my only recommendation is to reformat your startup drive and start from scratch.
