I think Craig was referring to a firestore drive or something similar that has internal software. Or a dedicated HDV recorder. You can also hook up another tape based HDV camcorder via iLINK and it will act as a slave to the EX1, stopping and starting during the record process as you stop and start the EX1. This was done only recently by another forum member here with a Sony V1U.
But as far as hooking up a stand alone FW drive and expecting it to record direct from the EX1’s iLINK port I’d have to say no.

But the HQ settings can be directed to the Composite, Component and SDI ports. I’m also pretty sure that the EX will do a real-time down convert to SD from the SDI port while it’s recording HQ to the SxS Pro card. The Sony manual does state clearly that the iLINK port is for HDV only.
Where is Juan Martinez when we need him to clarify all this?

[Bernie van Velzen] “Do you all have the same, or is it just me? “
Same thing happens with mine as well. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Using expanded focus during recording has no effect on recorded material. either. The flashes during a recording format change is probably a normal thing with this camera. You’ll notice that a similar thing also happens when you power up the camera.

[Ron Shook] “but can you be outputting that while recording 35mbps to the SxS cards?”
The EX manual says that only HDV compatible recording formats can be used for HDV output to the iLINK port. These are:
SP 1080/60i
SP 1080/50i
SP 1080/24pThis must mean that you can’t record HQ 1080/60i to the SxS Pro cards if you want to output an HDV stream via the iLINK port. But you can record to both the card and the external recorder at the same time.
Bummer.

You’re going to have to start charging big money when your EX1 arrives so you can get a satellite uplink for internet 🙂

[Jeff Carpenter] “HD computer file (on DVD-R) for computer viewing or use with AppleTV or other networked device”
This is an absolutely great idea and something that’s been the topic of conversation before. I just forget where. Anyway, since Apple TV is relatively inexpensive to buy I would consider including one in a client package just so they’d have the pleasure of watching an HD version of a project they’ve paid good money for. Of course, it would have to be a pretty high end client to justify the cost.

[AnthemWake] “I did a search for this, and couldn’t really find what I was looking for…Does the XL2 have 24p setting similar to the DVX-100?”
Yes it does.
[AnthemWake] “I’ve heard that the A1 doesn’t have true 24p; it’s Canon’s version of the technology.”
It’s called 24F. it’s essentially the same result as 24p, it’s just that the A1 goes about achieving that result differently. I won’t go into detail about that but the drawback is that you can’t use conventional decks or cameras to capture with other than another Canon HDV camera. Since it’s never a good idea to use your acquisition camera to capture with (wears out the tape transport prematurely) most people are buying a Canon HV10 or 20 for that purpose. They’re under a grand and will transfer any of the Canon recording formats.
On the other hand, the XL2 has true progressive CCD’s and you can use ANY MiniDV camcorder to capture 24p with because the 24p flags are imbedded in the DV stream. Then once in your editor the program will interpret those flags and provide the proper puldown removal.
More about that here:

When reading the article just insert the words “XL2” where it says “DVX100”. The workflow is exactly the same.

January 4, 2008 at 9:55 pm in reply to: Sony PMW-EX1 vs Panasonic HVX-200 Shootout footage online[Chris Baldwin] “1.) You mentioned problems importing. what is the workflow like with FCP?”
The workflow is pretty simple, actually. First you need to upgrade to FCP 6.0.2 if you haven’t done so already. This is because the EX1 uses a slightly different approach to the way it stores files on the SxS Pro memory cards. It uses an .mp4 wrapper that is removed during the capture /transfer process. You also need the Sony Transfer software which is a free download from the Sony site. Or if you buy the camera the software is included on disc. The Sony transfer tool works within FCP. As soon as you choose: Import>Sony XDCAM from the import menu the transfer tool starts up and you can choose one or all of the media files and then transfer them. The media files become .mov files and can be editied natively in FCP 6.0.2. You can also use QT Pro as a stand-alone app to play back any of the media.
[Chris Baldwin] “2.) How well do you think the two cameras could be cut together?”
This should be dirt simple because the EX1 has a 720p mode just like the HVX200.

[Thax Clave] “Will HD / HDV shooters need to carry and light-up with 2-3 times the amount of light they are used to?”
The answer is…………wait for it……………NO! 🙂
At least, not if they use the new PMW-EX1. I did a low light test between my PD170 and my EX1 and it beat the PD170 slightly in all low light tests. Yes, it’s true. The first HD handheld to beat the low light champ. Check it out:
https://library.creativecow.net/articles/greening_don/ex1-pd170.php
The article text is a bit confusing because initially I thought the PD170 was the winner just by looking in the viewfinders, Two days later I re-did the test and the frame grabs don’t lie. The EX1 has more picture noise at high gain settings but that can be brought into line quite easily by changing the edge detail, etc.
The best part is that the EX1 doesn’t cost much more than a good 1/3″ chip HDV camera.
