    Hello,

I have an avi. file that was made with a Pinnacle DV500 on a windows based comp. When I open it in QT on my Mac I hear the audio on playback, but I get no video. Does anyone know of a codec conversion for a Mac that would allow me to take this file and export it to a quicktime file?

    Thanks for any help,

I’m pretty sure you can get a third party .avi codec plugin for Quicktime Player. Check it out at the Apple web site. With the proper .avi codec installed you should be able to view the .avi movie and then export it to any QT codec you want. There is also a limited .avi Quicktime component already available in QT Pro. Make sure it’s active by going to Quicktime Preferences and clicking on the advanced tab then clicking on the MIME Settings button. There you can activate the .avi codec in the “Video only and video with audio file formats” tab.

    Don,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I have installed both “Perian”, “Flip for Mac”, and the latest “DivX codec”. I still cannot get any video. But i also realized this file was made with the Pinnacle DC30 and not the DV500. If any one has any other suggestions please let me know.

    Thanks

I did a quick google for the capture card that you used and found this on an old Apple Mailing list:

While that is old – it does sound like the AVI that was created might be dependent on the card that captured it or at least on a system with similar drivers installed. You may have no luck no matter what you do – especially since you’ve already tried Perian.

We ran into the same problem with the DC20. Had to find an old driver and run it on a Mac with OS 9 native to get at our footage. You may have more luck with the DC30, though, since here’s a free driver for that card on some Macs:
