That’s because both the 400 and 800 port share the same BUS. In order for you to capture to the hard drive you would need to have a separate firewire connection. Some cameras (like your Canon) exert more firewire control over your system than others.
The fix for you right now is to capture to your startup drive and once that’s done copy the video files to your external drive before you do ANY editing. To git rid of the problem entirely check out what’s available for your PowerBook G4 in the way of a separate FW connection. I know on my Macbook Pro there’s a firewire card I can get that plugs into the Express 34 slot, but you’ll have to check on what’s available for you. If you have a CardBus slot on your PowerBook you may be able to find something for that.

I don’t have a BenQ 24″ but I do have the T905 19″ display, so I don’t know if there’s a quality difference between the two models. What I can tell you though, is that after a while my eyes get tired looking at the BenQ display but they don’t with any of my Apple displays.

I wish I was at home so I could repeat what I did the first time, but…….using the Sony Xfer software within FCP all I did was use “select all” to highlight all the clips on the card and then press the “Delete” key on the keyboard and the card was wiped of all the media clips. When I put the card back in the camera there were no clips on the card at all. I recorded another clip right away and the card read that there was only one clip recorded. As soon as we’re back home in the new year I’ll give it another go.

Your observed runtimes seem to be about typical with my own experience with the BPU60 battery. I was used to the runtimes of my PD170 with the infoLithium 970 battery, so the rather short battery life with the EX1/BPU60 combo was a bit of a surprise. I suspect that the EX1’s hybrid lens draws a lot of power, especially if auto focus is being used in conjunction with focus assist. There’s a lot of gears, etc, to move inside the lens of the EX, much more so than the lens of a PD170 or Z1U which are electronic focus only.
Perhaps the battery runtimes would be better using full manual focus only on the EX1.
Some users have also reported that leaving a fully charged battery on the camera resulted in a drained battery when they went to use the camera a few days later, even though the camera had been turned off the whole time. I’ve always removed my batteries when my cameras aren’t being used, so I can’t confirm the problem.
