If I click on the FCP icon (I have 5.1.4), the white square that says FCP comes up with the license #. And then the standard window comes up, which says “unable to locate external device”, which is not connected. But once I hit continue, a window comes up that says “The application FCP unexpectedly quit. Mac OSX and other applications are not affected.” It does this EVERY time. iDVD also does this. Can anyone please help me? Could I have a virus?

do a google search for “trashing the preferences” for final cut.

    That usually fixes it.

I tried that and it hasn’t helped. Thank you for mentioning it. Any other suggestions?

Has anything changed with your setup since the last time you used FCP successfully? Have you added any third party plugins to FCP? There has to be a point where FCP was working for you and then not working. What’s happened in between to change things? If iDVD is also affected it may be a Quicktime thing. Anything changed with your QT version?

This type of trouble shooting help is really tough without further information, so post back with anything you can think of. Otherwise my only recommendation is to reformat your startup drive and start from scratch.

What external device is it looking for and have you tried to plug it in?
