In the “Playback” tab of the Final Cut Pro Preferences, using proxy media (once you’ve generated proxy media – File menu / choose “Transcode Media”) and/or setting the Playback Quality to “Better Performance” while tracking can help. The “Better Performance” setting is only relevant for realtime playback but the proxy media applies to all operations while the proxy setting is chosen. That screencapture movie was recorded on an iMac i7 2.93GHz with 8gigs RAM but I think it was tracking proxy media.

I uploaded the AE CS5 project file from that movie here ;

you want to be using the feature called “Control Maps” – here is a screencap movie with voiceover showing the basics ;

I was trying to do a variety of effects stacks using BCC Film Glow so that’s included in almost every effect… Here’s an image that labels each effect with the names of the plugins used (view it @ 100% scale to read the labels clearly) ;

FYI – it looks like perhaps this is fixed now in the latest Motion Update – I was able to delete a rig containing a param without first disconnecting the param and the param became free to use in other rigs etc. Glad to see it fixed – twas a real b!tch

I’m not in front of a machine to test it right now, but I believe choosing the preset from the popup menu does not work, but dragging and dropping it from the FX pane (I forget what it’s called exactly, the place where you see thumbnails representing presets) actually DOES work… And this indicates it’s a Sony bug rather than a Boris RED bug

I did a quick screencapture with voiceover showing how the caustics effect was adjusted for that image.

One thing I didn’t mention in the screencap is that it can be interesting / useful to preprocess the source image (Brightness- Contrast or Levels etc.) in relation to how it looks when viewed through the Caustics effect. The sample shots I show in the movie have a pretty uniform black or white background but in other cases pre-processing might be useful / necessary for getting the look you’re after

thanks for confirming – do you know if it’s already been reported as a bug ? Maybe I should report it just in case it hasn’t – seems like it would be worth fixing.
