Make sure your export settings and your FCP timeline settings are the same. Sounds like a square vs. rectangular pixel issue. Alternately, if there’s no alpha channel in the graphic, you can create it using the ‘animation’ codec, then render it once you drop it in the timeline. Should look fine then. Good luck

Hmm…might want to step back in technology a bit and dub some VHS window dubs from your source tapes. Tuun your time code display on and dump a VHS tape from each source tape. Mark them clearly so that you can work accurately from the client’s notes. This seems to be the least expensive and least time consuming way, as you can set up a dub, and walk away till it’s finished.

you can close the tabs using Ctrl-W, then reopen them in the order you’d like them to appear.

While capturing footage, or after the fact in each bin, you can add data to various fields that are sortable by clicking on the field name. Expand your bin window to get a look. Hope this helps.

Backing up projects for me, depends on the combined file size of the raw footage and of the finished sequence. If small enough to fit on a DVD-R, I make quicktime backups of:

The finished sequence
The finished sequence without music

If the finished sequence is too large to fit on one DVD….I export sections at a time.

I consider the source as the backup for the raw footage. If you don’t have too much media captured, you can select all of the clips in a bin….lay them on a timeline, then export as a Quicktime and write to DVD-R

Don’t encode a video DVD though…encoding compresses the media, and you’ll lose quite a bit of quality if you try to use the media from an encoded DVD in the future.

Does the General Error come up when trying to open the project, or does the project open? I’ve gotten these errors occassionally over the years, sometimes from corrupted media files, sometimes from errors in formatting drives. If you can open the project, try saviing it again using a different name. That’s worked for me a few times.

link the tracks using the ‘link’ command, or shift l….once linked all of the tracks will respond to your trimming.

…you may have to scale the vhs footage in fcp to l10 percent to get rid of the scan lines. Good luck.
