“FCP X does not support professional video monitoring. For full-screen, preview-quality output you can use the second DisplayPort output from your computer in Full Screen Mode. The audio outputs of the MXO2 devices can be used for audio monitoring.”

Thunderbolt looks cool but man I just bought 2 new Mac Pros, maybe there’s a work around to add TB via PCI-E.

No not your’s Gary. What may have been assumed from the Apple meeting with execs in London that current PCI-E cards would work with FCPX and that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Now Matrox has come out and stated that there won’t be Professional monitoring with FCPX. Hopefully this changes, I like FCPX for the most part. After downloading MC5.5 and realizing it won’t be long before they go through the same thing as FCPX with a new 64bit MC6, I’m sure they have learned somethings from Apple in the mean time. The GUI reminded me of OSX9 definite need of an Update. Powerful yes but a dinosaur in regards to workflow, IMHO.

Here’s an interesting article on the origins and reasoning behind iMove 08, which was originally called First Cut and was going to be a complimentary app to FCP.

July 8, 2011 at 6:01 pm in reply to: Is ProRes the big victim of FCPX?

[Dan Hayes] “Does it always render to plain “ProRes 422″?”

Actually it does allow you specify how you render, either ProRess, HQ, 4444, or Uncompressed 10bit.

It’s the import transcode option that doesn’t allow you to specify yet which flavor of ProRes you want to transcode to.

[John-Michael Seng-Wheeler] “Thunderbolt is kinda useless for single external drives. “

USB3 is pretty much pointless with Single HDs when you have USB2 as well, there just isn’t much of a future with it.

I think in the next year you will see some very innovative peripherals come out with Thunderbolt Technology. Just like with most new tech you will see the cost go down after the first year. TB runs on PCI-Express which opens the door for more powerful and faster external uses.

[Patrick Murphy] “For instance, the feature set of the Dell Alienware Area 51 ALX compare quite favorably with an comparably priced Mac ($3.5k).”

Dell Alienware is a gamer’s station, need to look at their Precision Workstations for a better comparative.

Besides you can install several graphics cards into the Mac Pros, however most editing applications only see 1 card at a time.

[Patrick Murphy] “1. For what they are, they’re monstrously overpriced. My estimate is 2x. Build your own and the variable
    2.5x to 3x.
    2. Despite the price tag they ignore most of the industry standard data protocols.
Firewire 800? Are you kidding? What about USB 3, and SATA?
    3. Apple’s Mac Pro’s don’t support CUDA, an essential for serious PPro users
    3. Is it reasonable to expect a company that’s turning it’s back on media professionals will continue to
manufacture a workstation that is only really necessary to FCP
    4. Certainly there are some specialized applications that require the platform.
Don’t you think these software creators are up tonight creating a port to W7?”

    1. Priced a comprable Dell Precision Workstation for the same price as a Mac Pro, no doubt Mac’s in general are overpriced but 2.5x to 3x is an exageration.

    2. Thunderbolt? So much more than what USB3 will ever be. Sata has been in Macs since the Power Mac G5s.

    3. You can purchase the Quadro 4000 and 4800 for the Mac Pro’s that support Cuda in the Mac Pros in the apple store. Also Apple in heavier on Open CL instead of Cuda.

Recent rumors suggest Apple is redesigning the Mac Pro’s to possibly Rack Mountable

Sorry, too many posts to remember, just read how someone did it on the cow just a couple of days ago and was able to get FCPX to see Xsan with a simple command change. Regardless, there will be a fix for it to come.
